Taekwondo athlete beaten case: Coach admits mistake and wants to make amends, police assess risk

After arriving at Mr. NTH's house (parent of NTNM - 13 years old in Da Nang City) on the afternoon of January 14, a representative of the Inspection Board of the Vietnam Taekwondo Federation (VTF) sent a document to the Head of the VTF Inspection Board to report on the results of the verification of the act of violence against martial artists at the Seung Ri Taekwondo Club, of which Mr. Nguyen Van Kin is the head coach and director.

VTF: Taekwondo coach admits shortcomings

The report sent to the Head of the VTF Inspection Committee on January 15 stated: "On January 14, 2025, VTF received a complaint from Mr. NTH - NTNM's parent about the Seung Ri Club coach abusing M. After reviewing the complaint from Mr. NTH, M.'s parent, about the Seung Ri Club coach abusing M. and under the direction of the Chairman of the Da Nang City Taekwondo Federation, the VTF Inspection Committee, and the taekwondo leaders of the Central region, the Da Nang City Federation Inspection Committee invited coach Nguyen Van Kin to work, and at the same time sent a representative of the federation to visit and inquire about M.'s health, with the following results.

The red mark on M.'s chest was believed by her family to have been caused by the taekwondo club coach.

Regarding the case of Mr. Nguyen Van Kin: According to Mr. Kin's report, at 6:00 p.m. on January 9, 2025, the class gathered to greet, remind, and hand over the class to assistant PPQ to start, and then Mr. Kin went to the office to work. At 7:00 p.m., Mr. Kin received the class, started teaching, and the practice class ended at 7:30 p.m., without any abuse of child M. Through the above incident, Mr. Nguyen Van Kin realized that the shortcoming was not thoroughly explaining the functions and powers to the assistants during the class. Mr. Kin himself felt guilty and wanted the family to forgive him so that he could correct his mistakes. He contacted M.'s family to apologize, but the family did not respond.

Regarding assistant PPQ: According to the report, at 6:00 p.m. on January 9, 2025, student Q. was assigned by Mr. Nguyen Van Kin to warm up the class and then was assigned by Mr. Nguyen Van Kin to control the physical training for the class. During the training, student M. had disruptive behavior and was reminded many times, so assistant Q. called student M. up to put his hands down and used a kicking racket (training equipment) to hit his buttocks and kicked his buttocks once as a reminder.

Conclusion of the case of the taekwondo coach accused of beating a student: Serious violation of professional ethics

On behalf of NTNM's family: Representatives of the Da Nang City Taekwondo Federation visited M. to inquire about his health, encouraged him, and learned more about the developments of the incident that occurred on the evening of January 9, 2025. Currently, M.'s health has stabilized, but he is still psychologically afraid when hearing about teacher Nguyen Van Kin.

According to information from the family and M., on the evening of January 9, assistant Q. used the back of a tennis racket (training equipment) to hit Minh on the buttocks and back. Then, teacher Kin came out to teach and during the lesson, he held a bamboo stick and whipped Minh 2-3 times on the thighs. M.'s family was very upset about the abuse and reported it to the Khue Trung Ward Police and asked the police to investigate this matter.

Waiting for official conclusion from authorities

Also according to the report, the opinion of VTF Inspection Board member Duong Le Quoc Linh is as follows: "Mr. Nguyen Van Kin and PPQ have been inspected by the authorities of Khue Trung Ward such as representatives of the Department of Culture - Sports , the Mother and Child Protection Board and the ward police. Through inspection, Seung Ri Club, chaired by Mr. Nguyen Van Kin, does not have legal status according to the regulations.

Seung Ri Club has been temporarily closed by Khue Trung Ward People's Committee to await the investigation results of the authorities. Currently, the authorities have intervened, so the Da Nang City Taekwondo Federation will take measures to handle Coach Nguyen Van Kin and Seung Ri Club after receiving conclusions from the authorities.

Coach Nguyen Van Kin said that he was in his private office when the incident happened on the evening of January 9.

In a related development, in the initial risk assessment document of the incident, prepared by the authorities of Khue Trung Ward (justice - civil status, health , police, women's union, children's officers) on the evening of January 10, it stated: "From the time M. was beaten (the evening of January 9) until the morning of January 10, there were only long red marks on her back on her thighs, buttocks and back. The child was confused, scared and had trouble sleeping after the incident. But up to now, the child's psychology has stabilized thanks to the intervention of the family. The child's health and spirit are normal. The family hopes that the police will clarify the incident to avoid similar cases from happening in the future."
