In Phuc Khanh village, Thac Ba commune, there are currently about 20 households growing chrysanthemums. At this time, the flower growers are focusing on caring for and monitoring the growth of the plants, and preparing for harvest to supply the market in time for the end-of-year season. In the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), flower growers are constantly out in the fields checking each row of chrysanthemums, monitoring soil moisture, plant height, and growth. This work is done regularly every day to adjust irrigation, fertilization, and pest control in a timely manner. This period is considered crucial for determining the quality of Tet flowers. Flower growers are always on edge, because even a sudden change in weather or flowers blooming earlier or later than expected can affect the selling price. Everyone hopes that their chrysanthemum plants will grow uniformly, blooming at the right time for a bountiful Tet harvest. Chrysanthemums grown locally for the Lunar New Year are quite diverse in variety. The most popular is the traditional yellow chrysanthemum, with large flowers and long-lasting color, chosen by many families for Tet decorations. Besides that, there are also crystal chrysanthemums, red chrysanthemums, and pink chrysanthemums, with flowers having multiple layers of petals and vibrant colors, meeting the increasingly diverse demands of the market. Each variety of chrysanthemum is cared for by growers using specific procedures to ensure uniform and timely blooming.
As Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches, local chrysanthemum growers become increasingly busy. From early morning to late afternoon, many traders, small business owners, and local people come directly to the gardens to visit, select, and order flowers. Buying and selling takes place right in the fields, allowing growers to proactively sell their products while reducing intermediary costs. Besides selling directly from the gardens, after harvesting, chrysanthemums are sorted by size and color by households before being transported to markets. At this time, chrysanthemums are widely available at Yen Bai Train Station Market, a popular spot for locals and tourists. The flowers are transported daily to ensure freshness and quality when they reach buyers. The atmosphere at the market is lively, with sales increasing as Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches.
Chrysanthemums are a familiar flower in many families every year at the beginning of the year. Buyers often choose potted chrysanthemums with beautiful shapes and evenly distributed buds, hoping for a prosperous and abundant new year. It is expected that in about 1 to 10 days, the flowers will bloom beautifully to welcome Tet.
