This move comes as the ruling Labour Party faces increasing pressure from the Reform UK, a populist party attracting voters with a hardline immigration agenda. The British government is therefore tightening regulations, particularly for those crossing the English Channel in small boats from France.
In a statement, the UK Home Office said that the legal obligation to provide support to certain asylum seekers, including accommodation and weekly allowances, would be abolished. These measures apply to those who are able to work but are not employed, or those who have broken the law.

Budgetary resources will be prioritized for groups that “contribute to the local economy and community.”
Home Affairs Minister Shabana Mahmood said she would release more details on Monday. She said, “Our country has a proud tradition of welcoming those fleeing danger, but our generosity is attracting illegal immigrants across the strait. The speed and scale of migration is putting immense pressure on communities.”
According to UK government figures, 109,343 people applied for asylum in the 12 months to March 2025, a 17% increase from the previous year and surpassing the 2002 peak.
The UK Home Office said it would consult the policies of several European countries, including Denmark, where asylum status is only temporary, subject to conditions and integration requirements.
"The UK will adopt and, in some areas, exceed these standards," the statement said.
Currently, the UK grants asylum to individuals who can demonstrate they are unsafe in their home country. Refugee status lasts for five years and can be upgraded to permanent residency if the necessary conditions are met.
