Wolves' resurgence continues. |
In the early hours of January 8th, Wolverhampton Wanderers extended their unbeaten run to three matches by drawing 1-1 with Everton at Goodison Park in the 21st round of the Premier League. While acknowledging Wolves deserved all three points, manager Rob Edwards considered the draw acceptable given his team's struggle to avoid relegation.
Wolves started the match lacking energy and were outplayed by Everton in the first half. However, the visitors' performance changed dramatically after the break. They increased their pace, pressed more aggressively, and were rewarded with a beautiful goal from Mateus Mane, earning a well-deserved point against opponents reduced to nine men.
David Moyes's team appeared quite relaxed before halftime, but were completely overwhelmed in the second half. Everton's momentum collapsed in the final minutes when both Michael Keane and Jack Grealish received red cards. If it weren't for Jordan Pickford's spectacular save in injury time, Everton might have paid a much higher price for their hotheadedness.
A recent run of positive results has significantly boosted Wolves' morale. After a draw against Manchester United in round 19, they beat West Ham 3-0 in round 20 and were only slightly unlucky to leave Goodison Park with a victory. The five points gained in three rounds is Wolves' best result of the season so far.
However, the reality remains harsh. With only 7 points after 21 matches, Wolves remain at the bottom of the table, 14 points behind safety. But the season is still long. More importantly, Wolves are showing vital signs of fighting spirit and improved gameplay.
The Premier League hasn't ruled them out of the relegation battle yet. And history has shown Wolves pulling off incredible escapes, which means hope isn't lost.
