(CPV) - The International Football Federation (FIFA) has confirmed that the 2030 World Cup finals will be held in 6 countries on 3 continents. This is unprecedented in the history of this prestigious tournament.

After the FIFA Council meeting held in Zurich (Switzerland), FIFA President Gianni Infantino agreed that the 2030 World Cup will be held on 3 continents including South America, Africa and Europe, with a total of 6 host countries.

Plans have been approved for the opening three matches of the 2030 World Cup to be held in South America. The first match will be held in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo, followed by Argentina in Buenos Aires, and the third in Asuncion, Paraguay. The reason for the opening matches being held in South America is to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tournament's first being held in Uruguay.

After completing their matches in South America, the six teams will fly across the Atlantic to participate in the remaining part of the tournament, which will be shared between the three co-host countries: Morocco, Portugal and Spain. Thus, the 2030 World Cup will be the first time in history that the tournament will be hosted on three continents.

Starting with the 2026 World Cup (hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada), the number of participating teams will increase from 32 to 48. Thus, in addition to the 3 matches in South America, the 2030 World Cup will have 101 matches scheduled to take place in Europe and North Africa. The final is scheduled to be held at Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium (Spain).

The 2030 World Cup will be Morocco's first time hosting, after five failed bids in 1994, 1998, 2006, 2010 and 2026. It will also be the first North African country to host World Cup matches.
