Director Mo Hong-jin has been nurturing the project for 3 years to complete the script of a film that connects the two countries of Vietnam and South Korea across borders. Mang Me Di Bo is his latest film after the success of the film The Last Wish of a Prisoner 2037 (released in 2022), which "brought many tears from the audience".

Caring for a mother with Alzheimer's disease

What would you do when you take care of your mother who has Alzheimer's disease (a memory loss in the elderly, causing their thinking and behavior to be abnormal)? Hoan - a young man who makes a living by cutting hair on the sidewalk - has not been afraid of the hardships and difficulties in taking care of his mother Hanh, over 60 years old, who unfortunately has Alzheimer's disease.

Despite his boundless love for his mother, Hoan was often exhausted and depressed by her increasingly serious illness. At home, he sometimes had to tie his mother to a chair; when he went to work, Hoan took his mother with him, but he also had to tie her legs to a tricycle for fear that she would get lost.

Not to mention that Hoan himself is also an epileptic and an epileptic seizure can happen at any time. God is really a huge challenge for Hoan and his family of only 2 orphans. As a last resort, Hoan was forced to decide to take his mother to Korea following the advice of his close friends to help her recover her memory, especially to find her first child to receive better care.

In her youth, Mrs. Hanh studied in Korea, got married and gave birth to a son, Ji-hwan. Tragedy struck when her house burned down and her Korean husband died in the fire. Mrs. Hanh was forced to return to Vietnam in pain and left Ji-hwan to be raised by her grandmother.

After many years, Hoan brought his mother back to a foreign land to meet his half-brother. However, when the mother and son witnessed Ji-hwan having a happy life, would they bother him?

Playing the character Hoan gave me a great lesson about being open-minded, accepting challenges and being responsible for loved ones, showing positive energy and openness" - actor Tuan Tran shared.

Sacred family values

The somewhat “shocking” title of the film “Abandoning Mother ” might make us think of a situation where a son like Hoan cannot bear the burden of taking care of his mother and will give up. But that is not the case. It is true that Hoan is torn and miserable, and lacks the conditions to take care of his mother properly, but is there a limit to his filial piety?

Hoan's filial piety and love for his mother seem to be a compass for the mother and son to overcome the pain and family tragedy both in the past and present. The happy moments between Hoan and his mother are like a rainbow filled with hope after a storm. The song "Here I am" sung by singer Vuong Binh in the film expresses the son's feelings with a meaningful passage: "If one day, mother no longer recognizes him, memories turn to ashes, it's okay, I'm here."

With a profound plot and many touching details, Mang Me Di Bo leaves many warm impressions. The film is imbued with the visual language of Korean cinema, portrayed through the very hard-working and focused acting of the Vietnamese cast. The strong message about the sacred emotional value of family, along with friendship, love and help between people in difficult circumstances in urban life are the "healing materials" that soothe the audience's soul.

“Family love is a gift”

That was the sharing of director Mo Hong-jin at the premiere of Mang Me Di Bo in Ho Chi Minh City on July 29. He expressed: “Usually, families with elderly people suffering from dementia or Alzheimer's disease have to face difficulties and sadness. However, I believe that family is still a place that tolerates and protects everyone. Through the film, I want to tell a story about people with the ending point being family. I also send a message at the end of the film towards a new beginning, a new happiness for the characters in the film."

Director Mo Hong-jin hopes that his film will contribute to raising awareness about dementia in aging societies, which is a global issue, as well as conveying a meaningful message about the value of family affection and "filial piety" which he believes is very important in the hearts of Vietnamese people in particular and Asians in general.
