One program, many books

Looking back at the 2018 GeneralEducation Program, which began to be applied from the 2020-2021 school year, marking the first milestone in the roadmap for comprehensively changing the content, methods and organization of teaching and learning at all levels of general education. A notable highlight is allowing educational institutions to choose from many different sets of textbooks to apply in teaching.

Speaking to reporters, Ms. Bui Thi Huong - Principal of Primary School No. 1, Sin Cheng Commune (Lao Cai) said that the selection of textbooks at the school is carried out each school year, based on the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training .

“From the 2020-2021 school year, when the 2018 General Education Program was officially implemented in grade 1, the school chose to use the Canh Dieu book series for Math and some other subjects. For the remaining subjects, the school flexibly combined and used different book series alternately to suit the actual teaching conditions of the unit.

Notably, according to the regulations of the 2018 General Education Program, the choice of textbooks is given to educational institutions, instead of applying a unified set of books as before, which is a breakthrough policy, clearly demonstrating the spirit of innovation and increasing autonomy for general schools.

Schools are more proactive in developing educational plans and choosing content suitable for students' characteristics, especially in regions with different learning conditions," Ms. Huong shared.

Sharing about the textbook selection process at the school, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Minh - Principal of Chu Van An Primary School (Tay Ho District, Hanoi City) said: "Right from the first years of implementing the new program, the school has built a systematic and strict textbook selection process. First of all, teachers have access to, carefully read and research textbooks approved by the Ministry of Education and Training. After the initial selection step, professional groups will meet, discuss and agree on the selection plan.

The results are presented to the Pedagogical Council for review, comments and further improvement. Finally, the school organizes a collective consultation to ensure consensus before finalizing the official list of books to be used during the school year.

The empowerment of educational institutions to be autonomous in choosing textbooks is highly appreciated by many staff and teachers. Thanks to that, we can be completely proactive in organizing teaching and learning, building flexible lesson plans that are suitable for the classroom reality.

In addition, during the teaching process at school, many teachers at Chu Van An Primary School expressed their excitement when they were able to proactively choose teaching materials, instead of being bound to a single set of books. With the same lesson, they can refer to and compare the way knowledge is presented and the methods of organizing activities in different sets of textbooks.

More importantly, allowing multiple organizations to participate in compiling textbooks has helped break the previous monopoly. When there is no longer a single entity holding all the publishing rights, the textbook market becomes more competitive, forcing publishers to improve content, invest in quality and optimize costs.

Electronic textbooks bring many advantages

After 5 years of implementing the 2018 General Education Program, according to Ms. Bui Thi Huong, the new textbook series has shown many clear advantages compared to the old program. One of the outstanding positive points is that most of the textbooks have electronic versions (softbooks) posted publicly on the publisher's website.

This facilitates teachers in the process of preparing lectures and organizing teaching. Teachers no longer have to spend time taking pictures of book pages, manually editing and printing them out like before, but can access them online, exploit them directly and present them right in class, which is both modern and saves time and effort.

In addition, many book series have integrated information technology, providing learning support software such as Vietnamese writing practice applications, learning games, illustrative videos, etc. This is especially useful for primary school students, especially those in difficult circumstances or ethnic minorities, with limited listening and speaking skills.

Students can access lessons through visual images and vivid, easy-to-understand sounds, contributing to improving learning efficiency and interest.

In addition, Ms. Huong also highly appreciated the Canh Dieu textbook series. The series of books is printed in color, presented vividly, with rich and beautiful illustrations, creating excitement for students, especially primary school students. The content of the books also has many positive innovations. Topics close to life, closely related to practice, are arranged in an open and flexible way, creating conditions for teachers to adjust to suit the characteristics of the region, the students and the specific teaching conditions of each locality.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Minh, the Canh Dieu book series generally meets the requirements of content and form. The outstanding advantage of the Canh Dieu book series is the ability to skillfully integrate soft skills with knowledge that is highly applicable in real life.

In addition, the book also includes interactive activities such as games, quizzes, etc., which not only help students understand and remember easily, but also arouse curiosity, proactively explore and memorize knowledge naturally and gently.
