Conquering a market of over a billion people
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade , currently there are hundreds of Vietnamese vegetables, fruits, seafood and many other products licensed for official export to the Chinese market.
Recently, the first batch of Vietnamese bird's nests was officially transported by air to the Chinese market. Previously, on October 20, 2023, the General Administration of Customs of China issued an export code and issued an official dispatch granting permission to Hai Yen Nha Trang Trading Company Limited to officially export bird's nests to this market.

Ms. Tran Thanh Hai - Director of Hai Yen Nha Trang Trading Company Limited said that the company chose air transport to transport exported bird's nests with the desire to ensure the best quality of products. Hai Yen Nha Trang identified the export of Vietnamese bird's nests to the Chinese market as a strategic goal. To create high-quality bird's nest products, the company focuses on selecting and building a source of good quality raw materials, applying advanced processing procedures to retain the best nutritional content of bird's nests.
According to Mr. Le Thanh Dai - Chairman of the Vietnam Bird's Nest Association, China is a very potential market for Vietnamese bird's nest. Official export to the Chinese market will create opportunities for the bird's nest farming industry to develop in depth. The official export of the bird's nest batch of Hai Yen Nha Trang Trading Company Limited to the Chinese market opens up opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises to export bird's nest to conquer the market of more than 1 billion people in the near future.
Regarding agricultural products, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung - General Director of Vina T&T Group Import-Export Company said that Vietnam has signed a Protocol with China on durian, helping durian export turnover to this market grow remarkably. According to the company's calculations, in 2023, the company's revenue from durian exports will increase by about 40% compared to the same period last year.
Need to carefully study the market, comply with technical barriers
Statistics from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association show that before 2021, durian exports only reached about 200 million USD/year. Since July 2022, after Vietnam signed the Protocol on durian exports to the Chinese market, durian export turnover has accelerated: In 2022, it reached 420 million USD; in 2023, it is expected to reach 2.3 billion USD, 5 times higher than in 2022 and 10 times higher than in 2021.
China is currently the largest export market for Vietnamese agricultural products with a value of 12.2 billion USD in 2023, accounting for 23.2%. A representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that agricultural exports to China will grow strongly in 2023 thanks to many Protocols between Vietnam and China signed in 2022. Accordingly, many types of agricultural products have been officially exported to this market.
Vietnam currently has 14 agricultural products officially exported to China, including bird's nest and bird's nest products, sweet potatoes, dragon fruit, longan, rambutan, mango, jackfruit, watermelon, banana, mangosteen, black jelly, lychee, passion fruit and durian. Most recently, on December 13, 2023, the Protocol on phytosanitary requirements for fresh watermelon exported from Vietnam to China was signed, which is expected to promote the official export of this agricultural product. Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is stepping up negotiations for Vietnamese chili to be officially exported to the Chinese market. This is an export item with a value of up to hundreds of millions of USD/year.
According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, China is currently expanding its imports of high-quality agricultural products from Vietnam. Many items are being urgently completed by both sides to expand trade. If new items are soon signed with China, agricultural export turnover in 2024 will increase sharply.
However, the challenge for businesses when exporting agricultural products to China is to comply with regulations on growing areas, packaging facilities, food hygiene and safety, plant quarantine, etc. If just one of these standards is not met, the goods will not be cleared through customs.
Another risk is the increasingly sophisticated and complex fraud. For example, recently, the Vietnam SPS Office (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that a number of Vietnamese agricultural export enterprises received requests from Chinese customers for the Registration Certificate of the General Administration of Customs of China, registered through 2 websites www.gacc.app and www.aqsiq.net and had to pay a fee of 100 - 1,000 USD. In response to this information, the Vietnam SPS Office affirmed that the General Administration of Customs of China does not require this type of document and has regulations on online fee collection. The above 2 websites show signs of forgery and fraud when using the English abbreviations of agencies under the General Administration of Customs of China in the website address.
Mr. Ngo Xuan Nam - Deputy Director of the Vietnam SPS Office recommends that businesses need to access the official websites of China with the extension .cn to check the registration results and look up information related to import and export activities. According to the regulations of China and Vietnam Customs, there is no fee for issuing export codes and certificates to businesses. In case the customer requests such, businesses are requested to contact the national focal point, the Vietnam SPS Office, directly to get answers to these regulations for businesses.
