Historical significance of the Victory of Garden-Da Ban 70 years ago

On the morning of April 19, in Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee coordinated with the Military Region 5 Command to organize a scientific seminar with the theme "70 years of the Victory of Vuon Gon-Da Ban (April 20, 1953 - April 20, 2023) - Historical significance and lessons learned.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Hai Ninh - Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee emphasized that the Victory of Vuon Gon-Da Ban has entered the heroic history of the resistance war against French colonialism on the Khanh Hoa battlefield, a typical testament to the determination to fight, determination to win, and the revolutionary offensive spirit of the army and people of the whole province.

The 70th anniversary of the victory of the Garden of Gon-Da Ban is also a milestone for us to look back, learn, and research more fully and deeply, clarify theoretical and practical issues; thereby affirming the correct policy in building local armed forces on the South Central battlefield and the role of building the people's war posture in the cause of defending the Fatherland.

On April 18, 1953, the enemy mobilized a mixed European-African army and puppet army with more than 4,000 troops with full firepower support to enter the Da Ban resistance base - the resistance base of Khanh Hoa province (Ninh Son commune, Ninh Hoa town) to destroy the base and destroy our main force.

Knowing the enemy's intentions, we proactively planned in advance. At the base, we used a small force to block the enemy, the remaining force circled outside to ambush the area from "So Thang Lo" (an old French plantation) to Vuon Gon (Ninh Son commune) as the decisive battle point.

Inside the Da Ban war zone, we attacked the enemy from afar with spike pits and mines, causing many losses to the enemy.

As a result of this battle, we completely destroyed more than 400 enemies, captured more than 100 guns of various types and other equipment.

At about 5:00 p.m. on April 20, the battle of Saigon Garden ended, General Le Blance was defeated, and we completely controlled the battlefield.

The victory of Garden Gon-Da Ban honored heroic soldiers, including Mr. Nguyen Luu, Battalion Commander of Battalion 59 - former heroic Ba To guerrilla soldier.

He was a wise, creative, brave and courageous commander in combat, close to and loving his subordinates, closely attached to the people and respected the leadership of the Party organization.

He commanded Battalion 59 to win hundreds of battles, with feats that have gone down in Vietnamese military history and the history of the Party Committees of the Central and Central Highlands provinces.

Speaking at the workshop, Lieutenant General Nguyen Thanh Tuan, former Director of the Propaganda Department, General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army, said that the victory of the Garden of Gon - Da Ban was the close combination of the main force, local troops and militia and guerrillas; it was the firm grasp of the area, taking advantage of favorable terrain, and arranging ambush positions. It was the promotion of the strength of the Vietnamese fighting style combining people and weapons, especially the creation of a minefield and traps, creating a "heavenly net" of people's war to effectively fight the enemy.

Senior Lieutenant General, Associate Professor, Doctor Vo Tien Trung - Hero of the People's Armed Forces, former member of the Party Central Committee, former member of the Central Military Commission, former Director of the National Defense Academy, said that the victory of the Garden of Gon-Da Ban and the destruction of many enemy forces dealt a strong blow, foiling the enemy's plan to pacify, pacify, concentrate people, and concentrate rice; defeated the enemy's large-scale sweep operation, with combined arms, modern weapons and equipment... The victory of the battle was very effective, destroying the enemy's sweeping intention until the Geneva Agreement was signed.
