(NADS) - YouTube may be preparing to change how it displays ads in an effort to cope with the increasing use of ad-blocking tools by users. Ads are the primary source of revenue that sustains content creators on the platform, so YouTube is always looking for ways to ensure ads are displayed and viewed effectively.
According to Android Police, one change being tested is the removal of the timer before viewers can tap "skip" an ad. This change has appeared on both the desktop and mobile versions of YouTube. On desktop, users may notice a gray space replacing the timer while the ad plays. Meanwhile, on Android, the timer disappears completely, but the "skip" button still appears after a certain amount of time.
Many believe this is a strategic move by YouTube to create the feeling that ads are unskippable, forcing users to watch more ads. This not only helps YouTube increase revenue but also encourages users to switch to the Premium plan – an ad-free service launched in 2018. However, after the Premium plan launched, many free users complained that ads appeared more frequently, especially when they did not opt for the paid service.
YouTube's recent changes are likely to alter the video viewing experience, with the ultimate goal of increasing advertising revenue and encouraging users to subscribe to premium services.
