This year, World Environment Day was launched by the United Nations Environment Programme with the theme “End Plastic Pollution”. This is not only a call but also an urgent global warning. Plastic pollution is becoming one of the most serious challenges to the living environment.
Speaking at the Rally, Mr. Le Cong Thanh - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment said that the Vietnamese Government has actively participated in proposing global and regional cooperation mechanisms on reducing plastic waste at international conferences and forums, such as the G7 Summit and the World Economic Forum.
The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment shared: Many localities such as Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, etc. have effectively implemented models of waste classification at source, “green markets”, and urban areas without plastic waste. Enterprises have also begun to apply biological materials, recycled packaging and waste circulation models in industrial parks.

In Quang Ninh alone, the programs “Ha Long Bay without plastic waste” and “Co To District without plastic” have achieved a conversion rate of styrofoam buoys to HDPE plastic buoys of over 98%, contributing to reducing plastic pollution at sea and protecting precious ecosystems.
Mr. Le Cong Thanh hopes that through the Environmental Action Month, we will continue to spread and share experiences and knowledge about good models in managing and recycling plastic waste; turning challenges about plastic waste into opportunities and motivation for Vietnam to implement a circular economy and a knowledge-based economy with the application of high technology to reduce plastic emissions.
At the same time, we call on all levels of government, domestic and foreign business communities, and each citizen to take action, not to be indifferent to plastic pollution, but to proactively create a green lifestyle, protect the environment - for the environment today and sustainable development for the future.
Speaking at the Rally Ceremony, Mr. Nghiem Xuan Cuong - Vice Chairman of Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee said: In 2019, Quang Ninh province was one of the first provinces and cities in the country to launch the "Anti-plastic waste" campaign on a province-wide scale, mobilizing the participation of the entire political system, business community and people. In 2022, Co To District Party Committee issued and implemented the Project of Co To district saying no to plastic waste - the first island district in the country to have a separate Project and Resolution of the Party Committee on preventing and combating plastic waste. Models such as Ha Long Bay without plastic waste advised and implemented by Ha Long Bay Management Board; Vrac - Bank Program implemented by Quang Ninh Cement and Construction Joint Stock Company ... have created a positive impression and received strong response from the community.

Up to now, the movements “Green Saturday”, “Green Journey”, “Collecting plastic waste along the coast” … along with many plastic waste collection campaigns at coastal tourist destinations, Ha Long Bay… have been maintained and implemented regularly, thereby forming a civilized and environmentally friendly lifestyle, contributing to significantly improving the quality of the tourism environment, raising awareness and consumer behavior of the community.
The Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee emphasized that this year's World Environment Day, themed "Fighting Plastic Pollution", has special and urgent significance, reflecting the deep concern of the international community and Vietnam for the environmental crisis caused by plastic waste.
At the same time, we believe that with the attention of the Government, the close direction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the effective support from international organizations, experts, scientists, and the active participation of localities, businesses and people, the response activities will spread strongly and bring practical results towards the goal of Vietnam having no plastic waste in the near future.
On this occasion, the Organizing Committee has presented gifts to fishermen including cash, fresh water tanks and life jackets; non-woven fabric bags to protect the environment, environmentally friendly glass bottles to the Ha Long Bay Management Board. In particular, tourist boats on the Bay were presented with glass products to launch a movement to limit the use of disposable plastic - a practical action to contribute to reducing ocean pollution.
On the occasion of the Month of Action for the Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment launched the Campaign "Join hands to reduce plastic waste - Spread green lifestyle", with key activities such as: Organizing "Day without single-use plastic" at offices, schools, supermarkets, markets and in major activities and events of provinces and cities across the country. Launching a movement to classify waste at source, collect and recycle plastic waste in households and organizations. Replicate the circular agriculture model, ecological agriculture, limit plastic generation. Promote communication and digital communication activities to raise awareness of the harmful effects of plastic products on the environment, ecosystems and human health; spread green actions and lifestyles to every household. Promote scientific research, application and transfer of waste recycling technology, production of environmentally friendly materials to replace plastic materials. Timely reward organizations, individuals, businesses, and typical models in the movement and activities of preventing and reducing plastic waste.
