According to global airport data released by Airports Council International (ACI) yesterday, April 14, there were about 9.5 billion passengers in the world last year, up 3.8% compared to 2019 and up 9% compared to 2023. ACI represents the interests of 2,181 airports in 170 countries.
The world's busiest airport is once again Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, USA. Home to Delta Air Lines, it has held the top spot for 26 years (27 of the ranking), dropping once in 2020 when passenger numbers declined.

Dubai International Airport became the world's second busiest airport for the first time in 2023 and retained that position in the latest top 10 rankings.
At No. 3, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is forecast to see passenger traffic jump 17% in 2024 from 2019 levels and more than 7% in 2023. Tokyo Haneda and London Heathrow, airports that regularly make the top 10, are No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
At No. 6, Denver International Airport is an example of strong passenger numbers at U.S. hubs, with more than 19% more passengers than in 2019 and nearly 6% more than in 2023.
Airports in Istanbul, Türkiye and New Delhi, India, ranked seventh and ninth, respectively. At eighth place, passenger traffic at Chicago O'Hare International Airport is still down about 5% from 2019 levels (up about 8% from 2023).
And topping the top 10 in the 2024 rankings is Shanghai Pudong International Airport, which saw the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from 21st place in 2023 to 10th, with a whopping 41% traffic growth.
According to ACI World, the airport's significant jump is due to "an expanded visa policy, the resumption and expansion of international flights, improved operations and the recovery of the Asia- Pacific region, especially China".
ACI cited economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, production delays from aircraft manufacturers and other stresses among the challenges the industry faces in 2024. But ACI's outlook remains positive.
There is still geopolitical and economic uncertainty ahead, and ACI expects these issues to have some impact on air travel. How much of an impact, on areas such as airline capacity or passenger demand, remains unknown.
“Obviously if the tariff uncertainty and everything continues… that could impact the growth that we’re projecting right now,” ACI said in an interview last week before President Donald Trump paused the latest round of US tariffs.
