Successfully treated many severe cases
According to Dr. Le Viet Huan - Head of the Department of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Khanh Hoa General Hospital, in the past, in the treatment of peripheral vascular diseases, the department often applied two traditional methods: open surgery and endovascular intervention. However, both methods have advantages and limitations. In which, open surgery is thorough but highly invasive, prone to complications; endovascular intervention is less invasive, recovers quickly but sometimes cannot thoroughly treat complex lesions. In the past, the department received the Hybrid surgical technique from experts from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City. This is an advanced, breakthrough technique, combining endovascular intervention (stent placement, balloon angioplasty, etc.) and open surgery (endothelial stripping, creating a bridge using autologous blood vessels or artificial blood vessels) in the same surgery. The Hybrid method ensures thoroughness, minimizes invasion, and limits complications. After applying this method, many cases of difficult and severe peripheral vascular disease were successfully treated right in Khanh Hoa province.
Doctors of the Department of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Khanh Hoa General Hospital perform Hybrid surgery to completely treat peripheral vascular disease for patients. |
Mr. TVN (70 years old, Nha Trang ward) was admitted to the provincial general hospital for treatment with severe right iliac artery occlusion, severe left iliac artery stenosis, bilateral femoral artery occlusion and below-knee artery stenosis. For elderly patients like Mr. N. and the complicated progression of arterial disease, consideration of surgical procedures and interventions must be extremely careful. To thoroughly treat the patient, Khanh Hoa General Hospital invited experts from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City to coordinate treatment and transfer techniques. After examination and necessary tests, the medical team of the two units decided to use the Hybrid method to treat Mr. N. Accordingly, the surgical team performed angioplasty and stent placement in the iliac artery to resolve the blockage and stenosis of the arteries here. At the same time, open surgery was performed, using autologous blood vessels as a bridge to treat the blockage and stenosis of the femoral artery. After surgery, the patient's condition improved significantly.
Many advantages
When endovascular intervention is not enough to completely treat the problem, open surgery has many potential risks. With the Department of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery initially mastering the Hybrid surgical technique - the optimal solution to effectively treat complex, high-risk peripheral vascular diseases, many opportunities have been opened for patients in the province with vascular diseases.
Dr. Le Viet Huan said that the Hybrid method brings into play all the advantages of open surgery and endovascular intervention, allowing doctors to access and treat difficult injuries quickly, effectively, comprehensively, while overcoming the disadvantages of other methods. This is also a high-tech treatment technique with a low complication rate, helping patients shorten their hospital stay. Treatment results at the hospital show that many patients have improved blood circulation, reduced symptoms of limb ischemia, restored mobility and prevented the risk of limb amputation. This method is effective in the following cases: Multi-segment injuries, difficult-to-reach locations; severe obstruction; elderly people at high risk of complications if completely open surgery; stenosis or occlusion of the aorta, pelvis, lower limbs with complications of ulcers, necrosis, etc.
As one of the doctors participating in the transfer of Hybrid technique, Dr. Tran Minh Bao Luan - Deputy Head of the Department of Thoracic - Cardiovascular Surgery, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said: “Hybrid surgery is a global treatment trend. However, not every unit can perform it, because to implement this technique, the medical facility must meet the criteria of modern medical equipment and human resources with expertise in vascular pathology. Khanh Hoa General Hospital meets all of the above criteria, so we conduct the transfer in the direction of hand-holding. As a result, after the recent transfers, the team of doctors of the Department of Thoracic - Vascular Surgery has approached and can independently perform this technique right at Khanh Hoa General Hospital”.
The successful implementation of Hybrid technology at Khanh Hoa General Hospital affirms the skills of the hospital's medical staff in performing specialized techniques, contributing to improving the effectiveness of diagnosis, treatment, care and protection of people's health, enhancing reputation and brand, and moving towards becoming a hospital in the South Central Coast region.
