Candidates need to have a strategy for choosing their wishes.

Candidates when making their wishes need to divide into groups based on comparing last year's university benchmark scores.

Within the framework of the program "Bringing schools to candidates" in 2025, on July 17, Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper organized a talk show - online consultation on the topic "Decoding exam scores, strategies for choosing university wishes" with the participation of admissions experts from many universities.

Candidates worry because their test scores are lower than expected

Representatives of many universities said that after the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) announced the exam scores, many candidates contacted the school to express their concerns. Because they had decided to register for admission to their favorite major/school but their exam scores were not as expected. The candidates' concerns are well-founded as this year's exam scores were generally lower than last year's, especially in math.

Master Tran Le Trong Phuc, Deputy Head of Training Management Department - Ho Chi Minh City Open University, assessed that the score distribution of subjects this year only decreased slightly compared to last year. In particular, math has a sharp decrease with the average score from 6.45 in 2024 to 4.78 points. Because math is a compulsory subject, the low score distribution affects all candidates and any combination that uses this subject.

Sharing the same opinion, Dr. Tran Thanh Thuong, Head of Admissions and Student Affairs Department - Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, said that low math scores can affect the total admission scores of many candidates.

The low scores in subjects will affect the benchmark scores of schools. MSc. Ngo Thi Xuan, Deputy Head of Admissions and Communications Department - Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City, commented that this year's benchmark scores of schools may decrease by 1-3 points compared to last year, depending on the field and profession.

MSc. Truong Quang Tri, Deputy Head of Student Affairs Department - Nguyen Tat Thanh University, was more cautious when saying that it is not possible to conclude how much the benchmark score will decrease this year because it depends on many factors such as the number of candidates registering, the test scores of those candidates and whether the quota for each major will remain the same as in 2024 or increase. However, it can be said that this year's benchmark score may decrease slightly.

Reassuring candidates, MSc. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung, Deputy Head of Admissions - Communications and Corporate Relations Department - University of Finance - Marketing, advised them not to worry too much about low exam scores because schools have many admission methods, even in one training major, there are many admission combinations, not limited to 4 like previous years.

Good score but wrong choice still fails!

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, this year, candidates can start registering their wishes on the Ministry's system right after knowing their high school graduation exam scores until 5:00 p.m. on July 28. Candidates can register an unlimited number of wishes, adjust an unlimited number of times, and add wishes during this period. Candidates who have been directly admitted must also re-register on the general admission system.

Sending concerns to the program, many candidates wondered whether they need to choose a combination and admission method when registering for admission on the Ministry of Education and Training's system, because this year there are many admission methods at the same time...? MSc. Tran Le Trong Phuc informed that this year, candidates only need to provide 3 main information when registering for admission: order of wishes, school code, major code.

However, Mr. Phuc also noted that during the registration process, candidates should still review their academic records from previous years, V-SAT scores, and aptitude test scores to ensure that this information is accurate and serves as a basis for universities to consider admission. In addition, candidates should regularly follow the university's information channels so as not to miss any announcements during this time.

This year, candidates are also allowed to register an unlimited number of wishes, so the question is whether they should register many wishes for safety? According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung, in previous admissions, many candidates had quite high test scores so they were somewhat subjective when registering only 1 wish and many of them failed. On the contrary, a group of candidates registered many wishes... Candidates who register too many show that they are not well prepared, do not have a clear direction and strategy.

MSc. Phung believes that candidates need to have a strategy for setting their wishes. Accordingly, they need to determine their favorite and suitable majors, then choose schools that train in this major and related majors. Candidates should choose at least 2 schools with last year's admission scores higher than their scores this year but with hope of being admitted; 2 schools with equivalent scores; 2 schools with scores 1-2 points lower. At the same time, they should choose 3 more related majors at 3 schools with 3 wishes whose last year's admission scores were lower than their scores by a margin of more than 2 points as a backup. When registering and adjusting, candidates must take notes to avoid confusion. Candidates should also not register their wishes right away but need to arrange their wishes reasonably, then register.

Candidates should also not focus on registering on the last days to avoid system problems. If there are any adjustments, please think carefully, avoid adding or adjusting too much...

Dr. Tran Thanh Thuong emphasized that choosing a scientific wish is what candidates need to do right now. Wish 1 is the most passionate major and the level of interest gradually decreases in the following wishes. For example: If you are passionate about automotive engineering but this major has a fairly high standard score, candidates can register for additional wishes in the fields of mechanical and automotive manufacturing, wood and interior design, etc. According to Dr. Thuong, candidates should choose from 8-10 wishes and arrange them into groups with different reference standard scores to ensure the chance of being admitted.

Meanwhile, MSc. Ngo Thi Xuan said that many candidates have determined the major/school they want to study, but because of low test scores, they are wondering whether they should adjust... "Candidates should stick to their original goals. At this point, the test scores are available. However, you need to have additional backup plans, specifically additional wishes" - MSc. Xuan noted.

Detailed answers about the subject

The program has received hundreds of questions from candidates and parents sent in the online consultation section. Many candidates planning to study automotive engineering are beginning to wonder about the suitability of the current curriculum in the future. However, experts affirm that this industry still offers many development opportunities in the context of strong changes in automotive technology.

Dr. Tran Thanh Thuong said that the training program of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education equips students with in-depth knowledge and comprehensive practical skills in technology. Students will master the operating principles of core components such as engines, gearboxes, braking systems, suspension systems, and automotive electronics. Students will also be updated and applied with the most advanced technologies such as electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, autonomous driving systems, and intelligent control.

"With the strong shift towards green, smart and automated technology in the automotive industry, this industry group not only promises to bring many career development opportunities but also has attractive income levels" - Dr. Thuong commented.

At the program, many candidates sent questions about language majors. Many of them were interested in Chinese language majors and job opportunities.

MSc. Truong Quang Tri said that the Chinese language major at Nguyen Tat Thanh University has an average tuition fee of about 45.3 million VND/year, the training program is about 3.5 years. In addition to combinations such as D01, D14, D15, the school also considers combination C00 (literature, history, geography).

Nguyen Tat Thanh University supports post-graduation employment and organizes annual job fairs for students. In addition, the school creates conditions for students to visit, study and work in China, accumulating experience and language communication skills.

For candidates who are passionate about business, finance, and economics , MSc. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung suggests some "hot" majors such as: corporate finance, banking, financial analysis, insurance, Fintech, insurance finance and investment... Interested candidates can refer to prestigious universities that train in this group of majors, such as: University of Finance - Marketing, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City University of Banking, International University - Ho Chi Minh City National University... In addition, candidates need to refer to this year's score distribution and last year's benchmark scores to choose a suitable school.
