On July 15, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said it had sent a document to the Department of Home Affairs regarding the renaming of district-level public health service units under the Department of Health, when implementing the two-level local government organization model.

Accordingly, 17 district-level hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City (old) will be renamed, including district hospitals: 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, Binh Tan, Tan Binh, Tan Phu, Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan, Go Vap, Thu Duc City, Cu Chi, Nha Be and Binh Chanh.

The Department of Health assessed that renaming district-level public service units under the Department of Health after the end of the district-level administrative unit's operations is necessary to suit the practical situation of the city.

Regarding the functions and tasks of the above hospitals when renamed, they will remain the same according to the previous decision of the City People's Committee.

Specifically, the list of 17 district hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City proposed by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health to change their names is as follows:

District 1 Hospital becomes Tan Dinh Hospital, District 4 Hospital becomes Khanh Hoi Hospital, District 6 Hospital becomes Binh Phu Hospital, District 7 Hospital becomes Nguyen Thi Thap Hospital, District 8 Hospital becomes Chanh Hung Hospital, District 11 Hospital becomes Lanh Binh Thang Hospital, District 12 Hospital becomes Trung My Tay Hospital.

The remaining Binh Tan District Hospital becomes Binh Tan Hospital, Binh Thanh District Hospital becomes Binh Thanh Hospital, Tan Binh District Hospital becomes Tan Binh Hospital, Tan Phu District Hospital becomes Tan Phu Hospital, Go Vap District Hospital becomes Go Vap Hospital, Phu Nhuan District Hospital becomes Phu Nhuan Hospital, Thu Duc City Hospital becomes Thu Duc Hospital, Binh Chanh District Hospital becomes Binh Chanh Hospital, Cu Chi District Hospital becomes Cu Chi Hospital, Nha Be District Hospital becomes Nha Be Hospital.

The remaining 7 district hospitals in Binh Duong (old) and Ba Ria - Vung Tau (old) have not yet agreed on changing their names. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health will conduct a comprehensive review and develop a plan to support the improvement of professional capacity for hospitals in the area.

Upgrading 168 medical stations into "mini hospitals"

According to statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, after the merger, the city's population increased from more than 9.9 million people to 13.7 million people, the number of hospitals increased from 134 to 164, this is a very large number.

However, the city is facing the challenge that the ratio of hospital beds per 10,000 people after the merger will decrease from 42 to 35 beds per 10,000 people, requiring large investments.

Ho Chi Minh City has 168 medical stations and 296 stations. According to the Ministry of Health 's instructions, there will be 125 standard medical stations over 500m2 . These stations will be like a "mini hospital" with full departments.

Associate Professor Nguyen Anh Dung - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - said that after the merger, the health sector is building a special urban model - a center of health, science, technology and innovation for the whole country.

"The city will improve the capacity of health stations after the merger, including output standards and expanding coverage of primary health services. It is necessary to turn health stations into places closest to the people, places that people trust the most, carrying out the mission of primary medical examination and treatment, classifying and periodically monitoring people's health, and making sure that people go through this level first and then go through other specialized levels.
