Three people were seriously injured when an escalator suddenly reversed direction.

Three of them sustained serious injuries to their backs and legs, according to local media reports.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:20 a.m. local time on Thursday at Sunae Station on the Bundang Line, in southern Seoul.

People were going up the escalator when it suddenly changed direction and started moving downwards.

A video circulating on Twitter shows people tumbling down stairs, piling on top of each other. One person is seen falling onto an adjacent escalator.

South Korean authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident.
