3 Times You Should Sleep Rather Than Try to Exercise

(Dan Tri) - Exercising and playing sports helps to improve and maintain health, prevent aging, and is effective in preventing the appearance of many chronic diseases including cardiovascular diseases.

Health benefits of exercise

Regular physical activity of appropriate intensity is an independent factor in the prevention and improvement of cardiovascular diseases in different population groups. Specifically, maintaining daily physical activity is reported to increase life expectancy by 8-10 years and prevent chronic diseases compared to a sedentary lifestyle.

However, long-term, excessive and unscientific exercise and sports can cause acute cardiovascular events such as myocardial ischemia, acute myocardial infarction, and stroke.

A recent scientific statement from the American Heart Association also indicated that excessive physical activity, especially when performed by unhealthy individuals, can significantly increase the risk of acute myocardial infarction and sudden death in susceptible individuals.

3 Important Times You Should Prioritize Sleep Over Exercise

According to TODAY.com , we often set our morning alarms with the best intentions, exercise, prepare a healthy breakfast, shower, and go to bed, but when the alarm goes off, things often turn out differently.

On those mornings when you struggle to even get out of bed, is forcing yourself to go to the gym good for you?

According to personal trainer Stephanie Mansour, forcing yourself to work out isn’t always the best approach. You may feel like you’re just being lazy if you sleep in instead of working out. But the truth is, sleep is just as important to your health as physical activity.

And there are a few specific cases where getting extra sleep is actually better than forcing yourself to wake up to exercise. Here are three specific cases:

First, you should prioritize sleep over exercise if you don't already exercise regularly, especially if you're not a morning person.

Second, if you are sleep deprived, focus on getting enough sleep first. You can consider exercising after you are well rested.

And finally, if you're very stressed, forcing yourself out of bed for a morning workout won't help.

If you still want to move, you can try some gentle stretching to warm up and energize your body.

Why is sleep more important than exercise?

In all of these cases, you may have good intentions of starting your physical activity first thing in the morning. But your body needs something else: rest.

In the first case, you’re forcing yourself to get up and exercise in a way that goes against your normal routine. That makes it hard to get yourself to exercise regularly in the morning, Mansour says. And for that reason, forcing yourself out of bed is more likely to sabotage your intention to exercise.

Plus, your workouts won't be as effective if you're tired. Lack of sleep makes it much harder to eat healthy and stick to a workout plan.

In this case, sleep should be a top priority. If you have trouble falling asleep at night, you might consider doing some stretching beforehand to help you de-stress and get to sleep.

And, for people who are already dealing with high stress levels, forcing themselves to wake up early won't help.

Guide for you

Instead of trying to force your body to burn energy first thing in the morning, pay attention to what your body needs right now.

If you're new to exercise, try incorporating movement into your day in a more natural way, like taking a walk after dinner or hitting the gym after work. Or consider doing five minutes of strength training or cardio with an online app.

And when your stress levels are especially high, Mansour recommends choosing gentle forms of activity, such as restorative yoga or walking.

Finally, for those who are sleep deprived, address this first. Take a look at your nighttime sleep habits and bedtime, and start there.
