52% of US businesses report increased revenue, optimistic about new orders

Despite global turmoil, about 52% of US businesses in Vietnam reported increased revenue in the first half of this year, and 45% added staff. Most still expect Vietnam to play an increasingly important role in the global supply chain.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City (AmCham) has just announced the results of a mid-year 2025 market update survey on the business situation of member companies operating in Vietnam.

New hires still outpace cuts

The survey collects responses from a wide range of sectors including manufacturing, logistics, real estate, energy, tourism and F&B. The association has more than 550 businesses and 2,500 individual members.

Regarding business performance in the first half of this year, the results showed a clear differentiation between industries, with nearly one-fifth of businesses reporting results exceeding expectations (18%), mainly coming from the logistics, manufacturing and large-scale F&B businesses.

In terms of revenue, more than half (52%) of businesses said it had increased compared to the same period last year. The manufacturing sector alone recorded a clear level of differentiation, with some benefiting from increased exports, while others faced difficulties due to concerns about tariffs and supply chain fluctuations.

In terms of staffing trends, the situation is generally stable. A total of 61% of businesses have maintained or increased their staff, of which 45% have recruited more, 16% have kept the same. Staff cuts are less common, with only 9% of businesses reporting a decrease in staff numbers.

According to AmCham Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City, this shows that companies are proactively preparing for long-term growth, even though short-term revenue performance is still uneven.

Overall, about 37% of companies rated the business environment in Vietnam as “relatively positive”. Businesses noted progress in administrative reforms, such as reduced paperwork burdens and digital government initiatives.

However, obstacles remain such as inconsistent policy implementation, ambiguous regulations and limited coordination between provinces and cities.

The business community in general and AmCham members in particular have expressed top concerns regarding tariffs from the US Government.

Maintain a positive outlook

Despite the challenges, the majority of businesses expressed confidence in the business outlook in Vietnam. Nearly 39% rated the outlook for the second half of the year as "quite optimistic", while 32% chose the "neutral" option. At the same time, about 37% of businesses said that the business environment in Vietnam is "relatively positive".

Despite many challenges, most businesses still believe in the growth potential and appreciate Vietnam's increasingly important role in the global supply chain. In addition, the rapid development of the digital economy, increasing domestic consumption demand, and capital flows into infrastructure are considered positive drivers for domestic growth.

Manufacturers expressed optimism about new orders moving to Vietnam from other Asian markets, although some said this depended on domestic conditions and global policy stability.

Overall, businesses are still actively investing, recruiting, and innovating, but remain cautious in the face of many remaining challenges. One business said: "Opportunities still exist, as long as challenges do not become barriers."

Many businesses said US trade policy had had a “some impact” or “significant impact” on their operations. Manufacturers and exporters warned that future investment or expansion may depend on predictability in trade relations.
