Having gynecological diseases and hormonal changes can cause women to experience pain and bleeding during intercourse.
Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Thao, Obstetrics and Gynecology Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that bleeding after sex can happen to all women. If it happens during the first time having sex, women do not need to worry. If after many times of intercourse, women still bleed, it can be a warning sign of health problems.
Vaginal dryness
This is a menopausal syndrome, when menstruation stops, the body produces less estrogen, making the vagina more susceptible to dryness and inflammation. At the same time, low estrogen levels also reduce the elasticity of the vagina, making it more susceptible to irritation and damage.

In addition, some other factors such as poor quality foreplay, postpartum women, breastfeeding women, using cold medicine, asthma medicine, anti-estrogen medicine, undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, using inappropriate feminine hygiene solutions... are also causes.
Vaginal tear
During sex, rough intercourse can cause small cuts or abrasions in the vagina that cause bleeding. This condition is more likely to occur in women with vaginal dryness due to menopause, breastfeeding, or other factors.
Infection
Some infections such as: pelvic inflammatory disease, infections in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and cervix, sexually transmitted diseases, cervicitis, vaginitis... lead to bleeding after sex.
Cervical route
The exposed cervical area is vulnerable to physical and chemical agents. If you have rough sex or use strange objects, it can cause scratches and bleeding.
Cervical polyps
Polyps are usually found on the cervix or in the lining of the uterus. Movement of the polyp can irritate surrounding tissues and cause bleeding from small blood vessels.
Cervical cancer
Bleeding after sex is a common symptom of cervical or vaginal cancer. According to a 2021 study, up to 3.8% of cases of bleeding after sex were diagnosed with cervical cancer.
Doctor Thanh Thao recommends that if a woman only experiences a little bleeding after sex once, there is no need to see a doctor. However, if the condition recurs, it is a warning sign that the woman has a serious problem and needs to be examined and treated promptly.
To prevent this phenomenon, women should use benign lubricants; avoid sexual intercourse during menstruation; take care of and clean the private area properly with feminine hygiene solutions with appropriate pH levels; do not douche too deep into the vagina.
