The delegates made the above comments about the Buddhist Movement in 1963 at the seminar commemorating the "60th anniversary of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc's self-immolation" organized by the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) in the province on the afternoon of May 27 at Tu Dam Pagoda ( Hue City). The event is part of a series of activities for the Buddha's Birthday PL.2567 - DL.2023.

60 years ago, on June 11, 1963 (April 20, the leap year of Quy Mao), at the intersection of Phan Dinh Phung - Le Van Duyet (Saigon), Venerable Thich Quang Duc burned himself to death to protest the policy of religious discrimination and nepotism of the Ngo Dinh Diem government. Venerable Thich Quang Duc's self-immolation shook the hearts of millions of people around the world . After the cremation, he left behind an "Immortal Heart" for posterity.

According to Venerable Thich Hue Phuoc, Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, the action of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc was aimed at "dedicating merit to preserve Buddhism". The self-immolation of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc and his immortal heart have shaken the hearts of people across the five continents.

“This fire has an unparalleled power. Firstly, it strengthens the faith of Buddhist monks, nuns and followers in the ideals they have chosen to serve. Secondly, it completely changes the perception of bad and evil forces,” affirmed Venerable Thich Hue Phuoc.

Most Venerable Thich Khe Chon, Vice President of the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Head of the Executive Board and Head of the Provincial Sangha Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, said that the self-immolation of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc used his body as a lamp to light the way for future generations.

Meanwhile, according to researcher Nguyen Dac Xuan, Thich Quang Duc's fire is a special historical milestone in the process of fighting to protect the independence and freedom of the Vietnamese people. Only with a loyal heart to the nation and to the people can one conquer the hearts of those who fight for the right.

On this occasion, the Cultural Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of the province organized a photo exhibition "The fire of compassion illuminates the history of Buddha" at the Lieu Quan Buddhist Cultural Center (Le Loi Street, Hue City).

The exhibition introduced more than 60 photos, sketching the whole picture of the persecution and the Buddhist movement in 1963. Most of them revolved around the two Buddhist persecution events in 1963 in Hue and Saigon, such as the image of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc vowing to self-immolate, the “immortal heart” of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc after self-immolation; portraits of martyrs…

According to Venerable Thich Kien Tue, Head of the Cultural Committee of the Provincial Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, not only the fire of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc and the heroic martyrs became the "fire of compassion" illuminating religion and life. The works on display are emotional images, recalling past lessons, illuminating the tradition of religion, the tradition of loving peace , independence and freedom of the nation.

The exhibition is open until June 7.
