Luc Ngan District, Bac Giang Province, is home to eight ethnic groups: Kinh, Tay, Nung, San Diu, San Chi, Dao, Hoa, and Cao Lan, who live together in a diverse and intermingled culture, reflecting their unique ethnic identities through language, clothing, cuisine, customs, and folk songs.
In Luc Ngan, the Tay and Nung are the two ethnic groups with the largest populations after the Kinh. One of the most popular and indispensable forms of cultural and religious activity in the spiritual life of the Tay and Nung people here is Then.
The practice of Then among the Tay and Nung people here is divided into Then in rituals and Then in daily cultural and artistic activities. Then is not only used in the rituals of the Tay and Nung people but is also performed in daily cultural and artistic activities, meetings, work, production, and in call-and-response love songs between men and women...
As a land rich in historical and cultural traditions, with many tangible and intangible cultural heritages of ethnic minorities, the People's Committee of Luc Ngan district and specialized agencies have, in recent years, paid attention to and implemented many policies to preserve, promote the identity and revive these fine cultural traditions.
Currently, Luc Ngan district has established and maintained folk singing clubs for various ethnic groups, opened many training courses to teach different forms of folk songs, provided financial support to newly established clubs and those operating effectively, and organized many cultural and artistic events to restore beautiful traditional cultural features and rituals.

To preserve and promote the unique beauty of Then singing and Tinh lute playing, the Bac Giang Provincial Center for Culture and Tourism Promotion recently collaborated with the Luc Ngan District Center for Culture, Sports and Tourism to organize a training course on Then singing and Tinh lute playing for 30 students from Luc Ngan, Luc Nam, Son Dong districts and Chu town.
The 2025 training course on teaching Then singing and Tinh playing aims to equip trainees with basic knowledge and skills in Then singing, Tinh playing, and stage performance.
Under the guidance of artisans knowledgeable in folk culture, students not only hone their musical techniques but also learn about the meaning, origin, and cultural value of the Then singing and Tinh playing art forms and other cultural heritages of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups in the area.

Opening these training courses not only contributes to passing on knowledge to the younger generation but is also a practical activity aimed at preserving cultural heritage that has been recognized by UNESCO as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
Through this event, the organizers hope to promote the learning, preservation, and development of Then singing and Tinh playing in the community, while also creating opportunities for artisans and students to interact and exchange experiences.
This is also an important step in the journey of preserving traditional cultural identity, strengthening community bonds, and fostering love for the Tay and Nung ethnic cultures among today's young generation in Luc Ngan district in particular, and Bac Giang province in general.
