Skyscanner, a travel company that specializes in flight search, shared with Insider the results of a survey that sought to determine what behaviors annoy passengers the most while flying. About 2,000 people in the US who have traveled in the past three years responded to the survey. Here are the seven most annoying things passengers do on flights, according to Skyscanner's survey.
Talking loudly in the cabin is one of the most annoying things.
7. Ask another passenger to change seats
About 31% of passengers surveyed said they felt uncomfortable when other travelers asked to switch seats with them. Anais Monique, a former flight attendant, said passengers should contact the cabin crew in the event of such a dispute. Many of the incidents have gone viral on social media, leaving travelers divided.
6. Use both armrests of the chair
About 31% of respondents said it was annoying when their seatmate used both armrests. The question of who should properly use the armrests remains a topic of ongoing debate among passengers.
In April, a TikToker shared a video about using armrests on planes, asking whether the passenger in the middle seat deserved to use both armrests. Some passengers disagreed, saying everyone should take turns using the armrests.
5. Recline the seat
About 31% of survey respondents said passengers should avoid reclining their seats on planes, but people online remain divided on whether passengers should be able to recline their seats on planes.
In August, a TikToker posted a video of herself “hating” a man sitting in front of her for reclining his seat, calling it disrespectful. While some agreed, others said keeping the seat upright was impractical, especially on a long-haul flight.
4. Take off your shoes or socks on the flight
About 35% of respondents said they felt uncomfortable when passengers took off their shoes on a flight. Planes aren't known for being the cleanest places — and one flight attendant told Insider that passengers should keep their shoes on to avoid stepping on dirty surfaces.
3. Talk to other passengers
Some 39% of survey respondents said passengers should avoid talking to strangers — and if they do, they shouldn't talk too much. But some travelers shared that talking to other passengers on a flight can actually be a good thing and isn't always against travel etiquette.
2. Turn on the phone speaker
About 42% of survey participants said they felt annoyed when passengers made phone calls or listened to music or watched movies through the speaker, causing noise.
1.Cut your nails on the flight
Some 42% of survey respondents said grooming themselves on a flight was the most annoying thing they could do - including painting or clipping their nails and trimming facial hair.
In February, a video posted on TikTok showed a male passenger wearing a dark shirt and shorts clipping his nails, then flicking the pieces of his nails at the person sitting next to him, which, needless to say, outraged netizens. Some said they were ready to confront the man and were disgusted by his behavior.
