Recognizing the importance of digestive health to people's health, responding to "World Digestive Health Day May 29", within the framework of the 30th Vietnam International Medical and Pharmaceutical Exhibition (VIETNAM MEDI-PHARM 2023 taking place from May 10-13 at the Friendship Cultural Palace, Hanoi), the Exhibition Organizing Committee coordinated to organize a seminar "Digestive tract diseases - Diagnosis and prevention". The seminar aims to join hands to build a healthy community, at the same time promote, help people better understand and apply new science and technology in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive tract diseases.

The discussion attracted a lot of attention from the public.

At the seminar, Dr. Nguyen The Phuong, Gastrointestinal Center for Hepatobiliary Diseases - Bach Mai Hospital, in 2022, the number of inpatients for gastrointestinal treatment was 9,689 people, abdominal ultrasound was 33,307 people and gastrointestinal endoscopy was 162,750 people. Subjects with gastrointestinal diseases do not distinguish between age, gender or occupation. Common gastrointestinal diseases are divided into 3 main groups: Upper gastrointestinal tract (including gastroesophageal reflux disease, ulcers, H. pylori infection); Lower gastrointestinal tract (including diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids); Hepatobiliary (including hepatitis BC, alcoholic hepatitis, gallstones).

Digestive disorders can occur at any age. Digestive disorders occur at any age, especially in children and the elderly, with many symptoms such as loss of appetite, not wanting to eat, indigestion, bloating, flatulence, loose stools, loose stools, even constipation or diarrhea, bloody stools... Most digestive disorders are mild, and if examined early, they can be completely treated. However, if acute diarrhea caused by cholera, dysentery... is not treated properly, it will cause very dangerous complications of circulatory collapse...

Regarding gastric diseases, in Vietnam, the rate of people with gastric diseases is very high. In the world, the number of patients with gastric diseases accounts for 5 to 10% of the world's population and in our country, this number has reached 7%. Another noteworthy figure is that up to 70% of our country's population has and is at risk of gastric diseases caused by HP bacteria (Helicobacter Pylori). The common disease is chronic gastritis with 31% - 64% of cases of gastrointestinal endoscopy. The most frightening gastric diseases are inflammation, ulcers of the lesser curvature, prepyloric, pylorus or antrum, which are locations that are very susceptible to cancer. When the condition worsens, patients are very susceptible to complications of gastric bleeding, gastric perforation, and gastric cancer. In addition, the disease is very easy to relapse, causing fatigue, greatly affecting the work and quality of life of the patient.

According to Dr. Nguyen The Phuong, the causes of the disease are very diverse: it can come from a sedentary lifestyle (office workers, drivers, people who do not exercise much...); eating little fiber; infected with H.pylori bacteria; using stimulants; psychological pressure, frequent stress; eating inappropriate foods; old age; losing weight (if obese);... Therefore, to have a healthy digestive system, we should follow the motto: "Do not eat too much, do not be too hungry, do not eat too late, do not stay up too late"; avoid eating foods high in cholesterol (fried, stir-fried, mayonnaise, fast food); drinking sweet drinks, alcohol; using a lot of sugar. Daily habits that need to be created are eating in moderation, eating slowly, chewing thoroughly, not lying down immediately after eating; drinking enough water, not using harmful stimulants, maintaining personal hygiene; should exercise regularly; regularly check your health to detect early risk factors that are harmful to the digestive system.

Since 2004, World Digestive Health Day has been celebrated annually on 29 May by the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) in collaboration with the WGO Foundation (WGOF), to raise public awareness of the role of the digestive system in health, as well as how to prevent, diagnose, manage and treat digestive diseases and/or disorders.
