Institute of Rare Earth Technology strengthens cooperation with Korea in the field of rare earth technology

Recently, the Institute of Rare Earth Technology (ITRRE) worked with a delegation of senior experts from the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), the Korea Mineral Resources Corporation (KOMIR) and Hanyang Science and Equipment Industry Co. LTD. This is an activity within the framework of the joint research cooperation project on rare earths between Vietnam and Korea, to assess progress and agree on a cooperation plan for the next phase.

Overview of the working session.

At the workshop, the two sides discussed the latest research results. ITRRE reported an overview of rare earth technology research directions in Vietnam, breakthrough results in the application of rare earths for agriculture and the technology of processing radioactive elements thorium and uranium. In response, Korean experts shared advanced technologies being applied in Korea, including high-performance Dong Pao bastnaesite ore processing technology, microwave hydrometallurgical method for rare earth recovery and modern mineral processing plant design ideas.

In-depth technical discussions focused on finding optimal technological solutions for Dong Pao rare earth ore, while addressing environmental challenges and radioactive waste disposal, towards the goal of sustainable development.

At the meeting, the two sides agreed on priority research directions for the coming period, with the main contents including: Continuing to improve the recovery efficiency and quality of rare earth products in Dong Pao ore processing; expanding research to other potential ore types such as ion-adsorbed rare earth; cooperating in developing high-tech products from rare earth and advanced materials.

Vietnam has abundant rare earth resources, while Korea has outstanding strengths in deep processing technology and consumption markets. Along with the increasing demand for local material supply from Korean enterprises investing in Vietnam, this cooperative relationship becomes more urgent. Therefore, promoting in-depth and systematic research cooperation activities not only helps to effectively exploit the potential of both sides but also contributes to building a sustainable supply chain, bringing mutual benefits.

The agreement on a detailed cooperation plan and the direction for signing a Memorandum of Understanding in the coming time is expected to open a new phase of cooperation, with more depth, substance and effectiveness, contributing to improving research capacity and promoting the development of the rare earth industry in Vietnam according to Resolution 57-NQ/TW and Decision 1131/QD-TTg of the Party and Government .
