For the first time, Vietnam has 9 universities ranked according to 8 training groups, of which 3 fields of engineering, natural sciences, business and economics have high rankings, in groups 301-400.

Which units are the three new representatives of Vietnam?
The UK-based Times Higher Education (THE) organization on January 22 announced the world's best university rankings by training group in 2025. For the first time, 9 Vietnamese universities were included and ranked in 8/11 groups: business and economics, computer science, life sciences, natural sciences, social sciences, educational sciences, engineering, medicine and health.
Of these, 3 representatives were ranked for the first time: Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City Open University and Hanoi Medical University. These are also 3 new schools to appear in the 2025 World University Rankings announced by THE in 2024. The remaining 6 old faces are Duy Tan University, Hanoi National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hue University and Ton Duc Thang University.
Currently, no Vietnamese representative has made it into the world's top 3 fields: arts and humanities, law, and psychology. For the remaining training groups, the rankings of the schools have not changed much compared to last year, but the good sign is that the universities still maintain stable rankings in the context of the total number of units participating in the ranking increasing. This year, no representative has made it into the top 300 schools with the best university training groups in the world.
In more detail, in the field of business and economics, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics leads Vietnam at position 301-400, quite a distance from the remaining schools which are only in the 601-800 and 801+ groups. In the field of computer science, Ton Duc Thang University ranks first with a rank of 401-500, a small difference from the second position, Duy Tan University (group 501-600).
In the engineering group, Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University both achieved the highest rankings in Vietnam, both in the 301-400 position. The same happened in the life sciences (both ranked 401-500) and natural sciences (301-400). In the medical and health group, Duy Tan University was ranked No. 1 in Vietnam at 401-500. Similarly, this university also led in the social sciences field (401-500).
In the field of educational sciences, Vietnam has only one representative, Hanoi National University, in the 401-500 group. This is also the second consecutive year the school has achieved this achievement after many years without any Vietnamese units participating.

What are the criteria for ranking industry groups?
THE announced that the method for ranking training groups is still based on 18 criteria, divided into 5 groups: research environment, technology transfer, research quality, teaching and international prospects, similar to the ranking of the world's best universities. However, to ensure fairness, in each group, this organization will adjust the weight of some criteria instead of applying a common ratio to all.
For example, in the arts and humanities, where research is not limited to scientific journals, the article citation criteria will be reduced in weight. Meanwhile, the engineering group focuses more on research productivity and collaboration with businesses, so the weight of these criteria will increase. In short, the ranking of each group will depend on the respective characteristics.
The data ranking the world's best training groups is compiled based on 157 million scientific citations, 18 million research publications and survey responses from more than 93,000 scholars globally, THE added.
THE is one of the most prestigious, experienced and influential university ranking organizations in the world, along with QS (UK) and ShanghaiRanking Consultancy (China). THE has been ranking universities since 2004 with QS, one year after the world first had a global university ranking published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (later Shanghai Ranking Consultancy).
