Immediately after receiving the information, the Vietnamese Consulate General in Nanning proactively contacted local authorities to verify the information and actively implemented necessary consular measures; requested the Chinese side to ensure legitimate rights and interests if these were determined to be Vietnamese citizens.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also urgently coordinating with domestic authorities to verify the identities of the victims and promptly notify the victims' families and relevant localities.
Following the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , the Consular Department and the Consulate General of Vietnam in Nanning are actively following the case, closely coordinating with relevant agencies of Vietnam and China, implementing necessary measures to protect citizens and supporting the victims' families in handling the aftermath.
Chinese media such as CCTV and the Global Times reported that at around 6:30 a.m. on Friday (May 19), a 7-seater car carrying 14 people overturned off a cliff and fell into a lake in Siming, Jingxi City, Guangxi. Preliminary investigations showed that 9 of the 11 people killed were Vietnamese, 1 was Chinese and the remaining person has not been identified.
Local authorities suspect the accident is linked to human trafficking in the border area. One of the survivors, the driver of the car, has been detained for investigation.
The Chinese side has informed the relevant information of Vietnamese citizens to the Vietnamese Consulate General in Nanning.
