The journey to light the fire of pride associated with "three farmers"

The 80th anniversary of National Day (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025) is an opportunity for the entire Party, people and army to look back on the glorious journey, cherish the great achievements in the journey for the noble goal: independence, freedom and happiness for the people. In that historical flow, the Vietnamese banking industry, with more than seven decades of construction and development, has always played a vital role in the economy .

The Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank) is a typical example. Established in 1988 with the initial name of Vietnam Agricultural Development Bank under Decree No. 53-HDBT of the Council of Ministers (now the Government), Agribank has a special mission: providing credit and banking services to serve the development of the agricultural sector, farmers and rural areas.

Since 1996, Agribank has officially operated under the name of Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, becoming a multi-purpose commercial bank. After 37 years of working with the economy, Agribank has always maintained its mission of "three farmers", accompanying the country's development.

In its 37 years of operation, Agribank has been steadfast in its mission of supporting the agricultural sector - farmers - rural areas. With over 60% of outstanding loans in this sector, Agribank is the bank with the largest proportion in the system. The bank's credit capital has contributed significantly to changing the face of rural areas, supporting agricultural restructuring, making Vietnam one of the world's leading agricultural exporters.

Agribank has effectively implemented 7 policy credit programs, 3 national target programs on new rural construction, sustainable poverty reduction, and ethnic minority development. Particularly for the new rural construction program, from the end of 2011 to now, Agribank has covered credit services in 100% of communes nationwide. As of June 2025, the total loan turnover of this program reached more than 7.6 million billion VND, accompanying over 2 million customers.

In the poverty reduction program, Agribank has provided loans to nearly 272 thousand customers, with a turnover of over 14,700 billion VND, contributing to the goal of rapid and sustainable poverty reduction. Along with that, more than 64,000 lending groups have been deployed with a bad debt ratio of only 0.3%, affirming the effectiveness of community credit management.

In particular, Agribank has allocated VND50,000 billion for loans for high-tech and clean agriculture, contributing to the formation of OCOP products that meet international standards. The bank also actively participates in the 1 million hectare high-quality rice project in the Mekong Delta, playing a pioneering role in implementing the green growth strategy, aiming for the goal of Net Zero by 2050.

In addition to "agriculture", Agribank allocates about 40% of outstanding loans to renewable energy, industry, infrastructure, consumption and services. On the digital transformation journey, the bank has deployed more than 200 digital financial products, reaching 95% of transactions via electronic channels. To date, Agribank has more than 9 million digital accounts, 12 million cards in rural areas, nearly 3,500 ATMs/CDMs and 15,000 POS serving cashless payments.

Agribank is also a pioneer in social housing credit, committing VND30,000 billion to support investors and home buyers, contributing to realizing the goal of 1 million apartments by 2030. In addition, the bank has allocated VND2,650 billion for social security programs in the 2020-2025 period, from education, healthcare, temporary housing elimination to island support.

As of June 30, 2025, Agribank's total assets reached over VND 2.3 million billion; outstanding loans to the economy were over VND 1.85 million billion; capital mobilization was over VND 2.1 million billion; serving 23.2 million account opening customers and 3 million loan customers. Agribank also established correspondent relationships with 667 banks in 82 countries and territories.

With its great contributions, Agribank was honored to be awarded the title of Hero of Labor in the renovation period, the Second Class Independence Medal, the First Class Labor Medal and many other prestigious domestic and international awards.

On the 80-year journey of the country gaining and maintaining independence, Agribank has become a capital bridge, closely associated with each planting season and each step of development of the homeland.
