Will AI “take” jobs and make some professions disappear?

One of the issues that many candidates and parents are interested in and raised at the event "Admissions and Career Counseling Day" in 2025 is whether the strong development of technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), will lead to some occupations being replaced in the future? Will some occupations disappear because AI "competes" for jobs?

Responding to candidates' concerns and questions about this issue, Master Pham Thanh Ha, Head of Training Management Department, Foreign Trade University said: AI only provides tools but does not completely replace humans in economic sectors. According to Master Pham Thanh Ha, AI helps us enter and analyze data, suggest solutions but does not replace humans. However, with the strong development of AI, training institutions will have to review and adjust training programs with new approaches to equip learners with new thinking and necessary skills to master technology, especially applying AI to increase labor productivity.

Dr. Le Anh Duc, Head of Training Management Department, National Economics University, also said that in the current trend of interdisciplinary training, traditional majors will also have to adjust or open new majors that combine economic and technological content, creating conditions for learners to develop many different skills so that they can have many job opportunities, even the ability to "job hop" in many industries and related fields in the context of rapid changes in occupations due to the stormy development of technology.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong, Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, also acknowledged that the development of AI always has two positive and negative sides. AI provides tools to process information well, create "robot journalists" and spread information on a wide platform. However, the current digital age also creates "opportunities" for subjects to impersonate voices and images, spread fake news that negatively impact society, and create challenges for the media industry. However, AI will never replace humans in all fields and professions and in the media and journalism industry. Journalists not only transmit information but also play a role in social criticism, policy orientation, not only providing truthful information but also aiming at humanistic goals, for the community, towards solution journalism, and creative journalism.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong, in order for learners to adapt to the explosion and development of technology, especially AI, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has been making adjustments and changes in the content and training programs, especially in journalism. For example, in addition to basic skills, the training program also adds AI skills to help future journalists take advantage of the power of AI in their work...

Dr. Nguyen Thi Cuc Phuong, Vice Principal of Hanoi University, also said that currently, all training majors are changing and adjusting to suit the context of artificial intelligence development, so that graduates can master and use AI best for their work. “If in the past, students majoring in foreign languages only studied to have the ability to listen, speak, read, and write one or more foreign languages, now the training trend will be to associate foreign languages with different majors; students graduating will have both foreign language proficiency and specialized knowledge. Many professions associated with foreign languages are having more job opportunities such as economic or tourism sectors. Currently, the number of tourists coming to Vietnam is very large and increasing. The demand for human resources with foreign language proficiency in many different positions in the tourism industry is very large.

In fact, there are job opportunities for tour guides with a salary of 3 million VND/day, but supply cannot meet demand and the rarer the foreign language, the higher the job opportunities. "AI does not support tourists better, but does not "take" the job of tour guides because in addition to information, tourists also need to communicate, learn and experience the culture and customs of the lands they visit" - Dr. Nguyen Thi Cuc Phuong said.

In addition, to the candidates and parents of students in choosing a career, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son shared: Choosing a career is not only a personal decision but also a way for students to contribute to building a sustainable Vietnam, deeply integrated with the world. Therefore, students need to consider carefully, based on their passion, ability and the practical needs of society.

According to Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son, in the context that fields of study are being greatly affected by the development of technology, students should proactively equip themselves with necessary skills such as foreign language skills for international integration, digital skills to master technology, critical thinking to solve problems and a spirit of lifelong learning to continuously improve. The Deputy Minister also hopes that parents will not impose personal desires on their children but will explore their interests and strengths with them; thereby supporting them in choosing a career that suits their abilities and ambitions.

“In the context of a rapidly changing labor market, it is essential to encourage children to develop comprehensively - not only in terms of knowledge but also in soft skills and personality. Understanding and trust from the family will be a great source of motivation for children to confidently step into life, overcome challenges and conquer their dreams,” Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son emphasized.
