The job market under pressure from AI

The job landscape is changing under the influence of AI. Sharing at the talk show “Catching the AI Career Wave: What to Do to Avoid Being Eliminated?” broadcast on Dan Tri newspaper on November 19, Mr. Nguyen Bao Long - Head of Community Development and Partnership Relations at TopCV Vietnam Joint Stock Company - said that the Vietnamese recruitment market in the period of 2024-2025 recorded a clear differentiation.

High-tech industries such as AI or semiconductors continue to see increased demand, along with positions that directly generate revenue for businesses. In contrast, traditional industries such as marketing, communications or customer care show a slight decrease in recruitment interest.

“In the past 2-3 years, businesses have restructured strongly to optimize costs and profits. AI has been deeply applied in operations, causing many traditional positions to reduce demand or switch to prioritizing recruiting personnel capable of using AI to increase efficiency. The 2024 survey shows that 60% of businesses have applied AI to certain positions and continue to expand the scope of using this tool,” Mr. Long shared.

From an educational perspective, according to Ms. Nguyen Phuong Anh - Deputy Director ofFPT Academy International, FPT Corporation - the market has hardly seen completely new jobs, but only an upgrade in job descriptions. This change has led to workers who are able to learn quickly and are ready to adapt to technology being highly valued and prioritized for retention.

Both guests commented that in addition to professional skills, openness to change and the ability to self-learn are important factors in the qualities of candidates in the AI era.

When workflows can change month-to-month to accommodate optimization goals, it becomes difficult for workers who lack the adaptability to keep up, and the ability to use AI tools becomes a must.

Adapt or be eliminated in the age of AI

Shifting from valuing degrees to assessing abilities, from "knowing how to do" to "knowing how to apply technology", businesses are forcing workers at the threshold of AI to choose: adapt to go further or be eliminated for standing still?

From a recruitment perspective, Mr. Long said many workers are easily eliminated from the game because they cannot change quickly. In fact, businesses are not looking for AI to replace humans, but rather looking for people who can use AI to optimize performance.

According to Mr. Nguyen Bao Long, Gen Z - a large force in businesses - thanks to their ability to quickly adapt to digital tools, is becoming a group with many career opportunities in the AI era (Photo: Hai Long).

“Initially, businesses may only expect 10-20% of their employees to apply AI, but this rate will quickly increase many times over. In that context, those who still maintain a repetitive work mindset and expect the “stability” of the old model will certainly be replaced. In particular, Gen Z - a large force in businesses - is adapting quickly to digital tools,” said a representative of TopCV.

On the training side, Ms. Phuong Anh recognizes that traditional education is also showing many limitations. Therefore, the training program must change both the update speed and teaching methods.

At FPT International Training Institute, teaching “what businesses need” has been applied for many years, but when AI exploded, the institute had to step up practice, bring students to businesses to experience, organize seminars and integrate AI into all subjects. Students are trained in the habit of thinking “AI First” and “Think AI” - considering AI as an essential tool to increase performance and upgrade personal value.

According to the Deputy Director of FPT Academy International, the institute's goal is not to train human resources that can be easily replaced by AI, but to form people who know how to exploit AI to become more comprehensive and competitive in the labor market.

Learner adaptation roadmap in the AI era

After clearly seeing the gap between learners' capacity and new business requirements, the big question is: what is the solution to effectively connect labor supply and demand in the context of AI explosion?

Mr. Bao Long said that choosing a career does not only depend on the industries that are being invested in or following trends such as AI and semiconductors.

“The most important thing is not to choose a “hot” major but to choose a way to study to achieve high efficiency, turning knowledge into a career. Learners need to try their hand and experience early in years 2-3 to understand which position they are suitable for, and at the same time enter the 0-3 years after graduation with an open mind, constantly experimenting to find the right career direction,” said Mr. Bao Long.

Agreeing with this point of view, Ms. Phuong Anh emphasized that sustainable thinking must be a "hot skill" - that is, professional capacity combined with the ability to exploit tools, especially AI, to increase personal value.

Ms. Nguyen Phuong Anh believes that instead of following "hot" career trends, learners should focus on perfecting their professional skills, supplementing AI and language skills to create a competitive advantage when looking for a job (Photo: Hai Long).

At FPT International Training Institute, flexibility in teaching to suit the practical needs of the market is making a difference. Instead of a fixed 4-5 year training model, the institute's program is divided into semesters, each semester corresponding to a field, helping learners to enter the market faster. The combination of study - work, internship and continuous updating helps them not to be behind the pace of change of the market.

From a recruitment perspective, TopCV representatives shared the view that young people should set clear career goals, accumulate experience through projects and internships, and at the same time hone professional skills, foreign languages and self-study ability. An international environment is an advantage, but if not, students can still supplement it through e-learning courses and practical experience.

In a context where skills can become obsolete in just a few months, lifelong learning mindset becomes a pillar for workers to adapt. Experts all agree that continuous learning helps career have clear goals, maintain proactive spirit and upgrade self-worth in the face of competition from new generations.

“Lifelong learners not only bring value to the organization but also to themselves, because only with the habit of updating every day can learners maintain competitiveness and keep up with the pace of the AI era,” Ms. Nguyen Phuong Anh emphasized.
