Early in the morning, at the vast high-yield rice fields in Vinh Thuan commune, farmers eagerly visited the fields. Mr. Truong Minh Nhan, resident of Don Dong hamlet, pointed to the rice fields that had been sown for more than 20 days and said that last season he planted ST24 rice variety, with a yield of more than 950 kg/cong (large range), and a profit of 3 - 3.5 million VND/cong. “In this hamlet, people produce 1 crop of rice and 1 crop of shrimp. For rice, they mainly grow ST24 and ST25 varieties because they have high yield and sell for a good price. The current rice varieties are all harvested after less than 100 days, then I switch to raising shrimp on rice land, combined with crab farming. With this model, I have an average profit of about 200 million VND/ha/year,” Mr. Nhan shared.
According to Mr. Nhan, a few years ago, many farmers in the region were still "swinging" with traditional rice varieties, low yield, easy to fall, consuming a lot of fertilizer and pesticides. When the local agricultural sector encouraged the switch to high-yield rice cultivation, people were initially hesitant. But after the first trial crop achieved a yield of more than 7 tons/ha, the selling price was higher, so everyone was excited. "The land here is suitable for ST varieties. In addition, during the production process, people are also instructed in advanced farming techniques, using biological products to reduce pests and diseases. Thanks to that, the rice grains after harvest are white, beautiful, favored by traders, so the selling price is high. Everyone likes it," said Mr. Nhan.
At the Lo Ren Clean Rice Production and Supply Service Cooperative, farmers have finished planting the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop. The cooperative cultivates a total area of about 400 hectares, with more than 150 members, specializing in growing ST, OM 18 and Dai Thom 8 varieties. Mr. Nguyen Van Truong - Head of Lo Ren Hamlet, Director of Lo Ren Clean Rice Production and Supply Service Cooperative said that since switching to high-yield rice varieties and producing clean rice, productivity has increased significantly. "Now people no longer worry about losses like before," said Mr. Truong.
In the summer-autumn crop of 2025, the average rice yield of the Lo Ren Clean Rice Production and Supply Service Cooperative is more than 7.2 tons/ha. Initially, traders placed a deposit to buy regular rice at 7,100 VND/kg and ST rice at 9,300 VND/kg. However, when the rice ripened, the price dropped to 6,000 VND for regular rice and 7,300 VND for ST rice. However, the cooperative still ensured a profit for farmers of about 3 - 3.5 million VND/cong thanks to reduced input costs. “The cooperative is cooperating with 2 companies and 3 enterprises to purchase rice. The price of rice is always higher than the market price, and payment is made immediately after harvest, so people are very secure. In the near future, we will mobilize more capital to expand input supply services in the direction of clean rice production, providing safe rice products, and at the same time promoting the application of science and technology to reduce costs and increase output value,” said Mr. Truong.
Many people participating in the Lo Ren Clean Rice Production and Supply Service Cooperative said that in the past, production was small-scale, everyone did it on their own, resulting in high costs, unstable output, and easy price pressure from traders. Now, thanks to the cooperative's organization from seeds, fertilizers, pesticides to harvesting and product consumption, farmers are more secure, and rice is easier to sell. Thanks to growing high-yield rice, many households have a better life, can renovate their houses, and provide their children with a good education.
According to the People's Committee of Vinh Thuan commune, in the summer-autumn crop of 2025, the whole commune will sow more than 1,800 hectares, mainly ST24, ST25, OM 18 and Dai Thom 8 varieties, with an average yield of 5.8 tons/ha. The commune has built a specialized rice growing area of high quality, low emissions, associated with green growth with an area of 1,700 hectares, concentrated in the hamlets of Lo Ren, Kinh 1, Kinh 1A, Vinh Trinh. Of which, a map has been made to register 150 hectares at the Lo Ren Clean Rice Supply and Production Service Cooperative in 2025.
Chairman of Vinh Thuan Commune People's Committee Huynh Ngoc Nguyen said: "The commune focuses on guiding people to prepare well the conditions to proactively take care of the winter-spring crop and the 2025-2026 summer-autumn crop to achieve the plan. At the same time, coordinate with companies and enterprises to organize production linkages associated with agricultural product consumption, helping people feel secure in production."
