Lao Cai - After more than 1 year of construction, the progress of Sa Pa airport construction has always received special attention from public opinion in the region.

On October 21, 2021, the Prime Minister issued a decision on investment policy for the project to build Sa Pa airport, Lao Cai with a total investment of more than 6,948 billion VND.

The construction site of Sa Pa airport is determined in some villages of Con 2, Con 1, Cam Con... Cam Con commune, Bao Yen district. The land use area is 371 hectares.

In April 2020, the Sa Pa airport resettlement area began construction. The project has a total investment of 409.9 billion VND, of which the construction cost is 221.5 billion VND, the site clearance cost is 139.5 billion VND, and the rest is other costs.

This resettlement area is located along the Red River, opposite the land that will be used to build Sa Pa airport across the Noi Bai - Lao Cai highway.

Once put into operation, Sa Pa airport will be the largest airport in the Northwest, capable of handling aircraft such as Aibus A320, A321 and equivalent or lower with 9 aircraft parking positions.

Recorded at the Sa Pa airport construction site in early May, machines and workers are working hard. Construction items are gradually taking on complete shape.

At the groundbreaking ceremony of the project (March 2022), Mr. Nguyen Trong Hai - Vice Chairman of Lao Cai province emphasized: "The construction of Sa Pa Airport is a long-standing dream and aspiration of the province and also the desire of the people of all ethnic groups in Lao Cai province". The completion of the project will be a major breakthrough in the development of transport infrastructure of Lao Cai province and the Northern Midlands and Mountains region, a strong driving force to accelerate the socio -economic development, tourism and services of the locality, create jobs, and improve people's lives.

Phase 1 of the project (implemented from 2021) will focus on building Sa Pa Airport to meet the standards of a level 4C airport according to the classification of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and a level II military airport, with a capacity of 1.5 million passengers/year.

Phase 2 (completed and implemented after 2028) will complete the project items so that the airport can reach a capacity of 3 million passengers/year.

The investment in Sa Pa airport will make Lao Cai a locality with all four types of transportation directly connected to the Chinese market; creating conditions for Lao Cai and other provinces in the region to develop comprehensively in many fields.
