Anya Taylor-Joy asked senior Charlize Theron before filming 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga'

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, released in the US and Vietnam on May 24, is a prequel to 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road and focuses on the character Furiosa, played for the first time by Charlize Theron (48 years old). Now, Anya Taylor-Joy (28 years old) takes on the female lead in the story set during Furiosa's childhood and adolescence.

Anya Taylor-Joy praised Charlize Theron in a recent interview with CNN , saying she's been in touch with the Oscar-winning actress. They now both play Furiosa in Miller's Mad Max series.

"We emailed a lot. We met at the Oscars. She was lovely, charming. We had a long dinner, just exchanging war stories. But I felt so lucky to be playing the same character as her. Charlize is one of my favorite actresses and I think she's amazing," Taylor-Joy said of Charlize Theron.

Taylor-Joy said that before reading the script for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga , she felt a connection to the character because she had seen Theron perform in the 2015 film.

"I was lucky enough to fall in love with the character of Furiosa through Charlize's performance in Mad Max: Fury Road . I think this character is someone who has really stuck with me," Taylor-Joy said.

Director George Miller, who created the Mad Max action series in 1979 starring Mel Gibson, said he considered reprising Theron for the new film, but ultimately decided to find a new star to better portray the timeline of Furiosa's story. In the new film, Furiosa appears from the ages of 10 to 26.

Miller initially considered using de-aging technology to bring Theron back to play Furiosa, but ultimately changed his mind because he believed the technology could distract the performer from her performance.

The director said that even some of the best filmmakers like Martin Scorsese or Ang Lee do not believe that anti-aging technology is as effective as real, original acting.

Miller continued: "I watch on the big screen, especially the actors' faces, and observe the smallest things, all the movements and gestures. There are things that even the computer really can't do. So I quickly changed my mind."

The director commented after watching another film Taylor-Joy starred in: "Anya has a mystique - a timeless, almost regal quality."

Starring opposite Taylor-Joy is Chris Hemsworth. The Marvel star, best known for playing Thor, takes on the villain Dementus. "The role is very different from anything I've played before," Hemsworth told CNN .

Miller admitted that he came up with the character of Dementus years ago, even before he made Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015. "We had some concept art and I wanted Dementus to have an almost Roman emperor's nose," Miller said of the villain Dementus, played by Hemsworth. Hemsworth said that transformation helped him get to grips with the character.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the fifth film in Miller's Mad Max series. The director said he envisions more stories revolving around other characters but did not reveal exact plans for any future films.
