Tropical depression weakens, warning of strong storm formation in East Sea

(Chinhphu.vn) - This morning (August 19), a tropical depression approached Hai Phong - Quang Ninh, and is forecast to enter the Vietnam - China border today and gradually weaken. There are many disturbances off the coast of the Philippines, with the risk of forming a strong storm entering the East Sea in late August.

Direction of tropical depression on the morning of August 19

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 7:00 a.m. on August 19, the tropical depression was at about 21.4 degrees North latitude; 107.2 degrees East longitude, located on the mainland of the Quang Ninh - Lang Son area. Strongest wind: Level 6 (39-49 km/h), gusting to level 8.

Forecast: In the next 3 hours, the tropical depression will move in the North Northwest direction, at a speed of about 15km/h.

It is forecasted that today, the tropical depression will move northwestward at about 15km per hour, enter the Vietnam-China border area and gradually weaken into a low pressure area. By 4pm this afternoon, the center of the low pressure area will be on the Vietnam-China border and gradually dissipate.

Due to the influence of the tropical depression, today, rain continues in the North.

From early morning to night of August 19, the Northeast region and Thanh Hoa had moderate to heavy rain with common rainfall of 40-100mm, locally very heavy rain over 250mm.

The Northwest region will have scattered showers and thunderstorms today and tonight with rainfall ranging from 15-30mm, with some places over 80mm.

At sea, the northern area of the Gulf of Tonkin (including the special zones of Bach Long Vi, Cat Hai, Co To and Van Don) on August 19 will have thunderstorms and strong winds of level 6, gusting to level 8, waves 2-3.5m high, rough seas. Ships operating in the above-mentioned dangerous areas are likely to be affected by thunderstorms, whirlwinds, strong winds, and large waves.

On land on August 19, coastal areas of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong have strong winds of level 6, gusting to level 8.

During the day and night of August 19, the Northeast and Thanh Hoa regions will have moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms with common rainfall of 40-70mm, and locally very heavy rain of over 150mm.

Other areas across the country today have little rain, sunny days, but the South and Central Highlands may have scattered rain in some areas in the late afternoon and tonight, with moderate to heavy rain in some areas.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, currently in the Northwest Pacific region, there are strong disturbances that can develop into tropical depressions/storms, then potentially move into the East Sea, affecting the weather of the Northern and Central regions in the last days of August 2025.

The agency noted that people need to pay attention to the updated news on the website www.nchmf.gov.vn, weather monitoring information and immediate warnings of thunderstorms and lightning.

Although not in the path of the tropical depression, Hanoi is still affected by heavy rain. Today, some areas of Hanoi have had heavy rain.

It is forecasted that by the evening of August 19, Hanoi will continue to have moderate to heavy rain, some places will have very heavy rain and thunderstorms, then scattered showers and thunderstorms. Total rainfall is generally from 30 - 80mm, some places over 150mm. Rain appears in waves with moderate, heavy to very heavy rain. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind.

On August 20, Hanoi city will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, with average rainfall of 5 - 15mm.
