According to the latest report from analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 17 will only be equipped with the A18 chip - which is currently used on the iPhone 16. This is the first time Apple has kept the old chip from the previous standard line, instead of reusing the Pro version like previous years. Along with the lack of other upgrades, BGR believes that Apple seems to not want customers to buy the regular iPhone, to have to switch to the higher-end version.
This has led many to question whether Apple is no longer interested in the average user. Previous leaks have also confirmed notable design changes, including a new camera bar cluster, only appearing on the iPhone 17 Pro and Air.
The lack of upgrades to the base model may help Apple keep prices stable amid trade tensions, but it also makes the model less appealing to tech-savvy consumers.
Even long-awaited features like ProMotion display and Always-On Display mode may be absent. The iPhone 17 is said to have only one main camera and less-than-stellar battery life. The thin and light design and A18 processor may be the only things that help this model retain mass-market interest.
Meanwhile, Apple is focusing on the Pro line and the new iPhone 17 Air - a device positioned between the standard and Pro versions. This is to attract users who want to upgrade but are not willing to spend much.
According to analyst Jeff Pu, the fact that the standard iPhone 17 may only be equipped with the same chip as the iPhone 16 series marks a change in Apple's strategy.
Aside from the processor, the other hardware elements of the iPhone 17 are not much of a breakthrough. The device is expected to retain the same 6.1-inch screen size. Some rumors suggest that the iPhone 17 may be upgraded to a 120Hz refresh rate screen - previously only available on high-end models - but there is currently no clear confirmation from the company or the supply chain.

In terms of design, the iPhone 17 may receive some minor tweaks. According to Digital Chat Station and Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is working on shrinking the Face ID sensor, which will help optimize the space on the front. However, the Dynamic Island area will not change much this year. Bigger improvements to Face ID are expected to come in 2027 on the iPhone 18 Pro line.
For the average user, these changes may not be enough to spur the need to upgrade. Especially in the context of the iPhone 17 design that does not seem to have changed significantly compared to the iPhone 16, from the camera cluster to the back and the frame. The iPhone 17 series is expected to launch in September this year.
