In the Power On newsletter on Bloomberg , analyst Mark Gurman said that the iPad Pro M5 will have a big change when Apple is expected to add a selfie camera on the top bezel (when holding the device vertically), next to the current horizontal camera.
In the past, iPad models always had the selfie camera on the top edge of the screen. Since the iPad Pro M4, Apple has moved the camera position to the right edge (from vertical to horizontal), creating a natural position for users who often have online meetings.
“When Apple launched the iPad Pro M4 in May 2024, they made the product thinner and also moved the FaceTime camera from vertical to horizontal. This was an interesting change for people like me who are used to holding the phone horizontally,” said Gurman.
Coming to the iPad Pro M5, rumors predict that Apple will integrate a second selfie camera in the same position. This could help users make FaceTime calls and take better photos in both directions, especially if they like to hold the device in portrait position.
“People who like to hold their phones vertically suddenly find it more difficult to unlock and use the front camera. The solution is quite simple: Apple wants to add a second front camera, in a vertical position, to the iPad Pro M5,” Gurman emphasized.
Bloomberg 's writer said that this is not a groundbreaking change, but it is still a valuable improvement to make using the device more convenient.
“This change reminds me of Apple’s iPad charging plan in 2010. The first generation of the product was expected to feature a 30-pin charging port in both horizontal and vertical orientations, but Steve Jobs rejected the idea before the device was launched earlier that year.
On the contrary, the option of adding a selfie camera on the iPad Pro is probably not too annoying, because the camera cluster is almost invisible behind the black border," Gurman added.
The iPad Pro M5 is likely to launch at the end of the year. In addition to the change in the front camera, the most prominent upgrade on the product is expected to come from the M5 processor chip. Software is also a factor worth waiting for when iPadOS 26 switches to the Liquid Glass interface, adding a menu bar and a multi-window system similar to macOS.
According to 9to5Mac , the iPad Pro M5 could be Apple's first product to feature the M5 chip, while Macs with M5 are expected to launch in the first half of 2026.
