Although the Apple Vision Pro virtual reality headset won't officially hit the shelves for another week, the hype it's generating in the Chinese black market is astonishing analysts.
On the Xianyu app, a popular online marketplace owned by Alibaba, dozens of merchants said they would ship the device from the US to China after it goes on sale on February 2nd, provided buyers are willing to pay double the official price.
According to Apple, the Vision Pro virtual reality headset comes in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB versions, priced at $3,499, $3,699, and $3,899 respectively.
However, on Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Taobao, JD.com, and Xianyu, the price of Vision Pro is being pushed up to range from $4,220 to $12,662.
Even on Chinese social media, speculators have driven the price of Vision Pro up to an astronomical 100,000 yuan (approximately over $14,000).
According to Bloomberg , after its release in the US, Apple plans to introduce Vision Pro to China, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
At $3,499, the Vision Pro isn't for everyone. However, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's calculations, Apple sold between 160,000 and 180,000 Vision Pro units in the pre-order week. This far exceeded Kuo's earlier forecast of 60,000 to 80,000 units.
Despite a decline in AR/VR headset shipments last year, IDC forecasts nearly 47% growth this year thanks to new product launches like the Vision Pro.
