First discovery of Asiatic black bear - an endangered wild animal
On January 7, Mr. Do Ngoc Duong, Director of Pu Hu Nature Reserve (Thanh Hoa province) confirmed that through camera traps, he discovered a family of sun bears in Trung Thanh commune, Quan Hoa district, belonging to Pu Hu Nature Reserve managed by the unit.

According to the Director of Pu Hu Nature Reserve, after discovering the herd of Asian bears, the unit has organized synchronous measures to protect and preserve this rare animal species as well as other wild animals.
"This is an animal species that is very vulnerable to extinction, so we need the cooperation of local authorities, agencies and local people to protect it," added the Director of Pu Hu Nature Reserve.
Previously, implementing Decision No. 4046/QD-UBND dated November 22, 2022 of the Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee on approving the outline and budget estimate for the task of investigating, assessing the current status and conserving bears in Pu Hu Nature Reserve, with an implementation period of 3 years (2023-2025).
The Management Board of Pu Hu Nature Reserve continues to coordinate with the consulting unit to deploy bear monitoring activities using camera traps. Through checking the camera traps, it was shown that on August 12, 2024, Trung Thanh commune, Quan Hoa district, took a total of 209 photos of 3 individual Asian bears living in a herd playing together in one location.
According to the reserve leader, the moon bear is an animal that is very vulnerable to extinction, so it needs the cooperation of local authorities, agencies and local people to protect it.
These are rare moments recording the population of Asian bears appearing together in the wild in the current protected forests. At the same time, it is a testament to the diversity of wildlife resources that are still being preserved, and is also a signal worth noting the efforts to protect forests and habitats for wild animals in Pu Hu Nature Reserve in the recent period.
Pu Hu Nature Reserve has a total of 52 species recorded in the Red Book.
Previously, Pu Hu Nature Reserve also set up digital camera traps, recording and detecting many wild animals such as wild cats, muntjacs, silver-cheeked weasels, yellow-throated weasels, jungle fowl, front-facing chickens, pig badgers, wild boars...
Each image of rare and precious wildlife recorded in the Scientific research program is an important motivation and belief for each staff of Pu Hu Nature Reserve to continue to promote and make more efforts in patrolling and protecting biodiversity resources better in the next phase.
Pu Hu Nature Reserve is located in Quan Hoa and Muong Lat districts (Thanh Hoa province), with an area of over 24,200 hectares of natural forest.
In addition to the Asian black bear, Pu Hu Nature Reserve currently has 1,725 plant species belonging to 696 genera, 170 families, 71 orders, 12 classes and 6 phyla.

Most of the higher plant species are concentrated in the strictly protected area of the reserve. In addition, the flora in Pu Hu Nature Reserve has a total of 52 species recorded in the Vietnam Red Book 2007 and 93 species are recorded, 16 species are listed in Decree 06/2019/ND-CP.
The fauna is not only rich in species but some species are also concentrated at high density. Through the survey results, a total of 915 animal species were recorded, of which more than 30 rare animal species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book and the World Red Book.
The Moon Bear, scientifically known as Ursus thibetanus or Ursus tibetanus, is also known as the Tibetan Black Bear, Himalayan Black Bear or Asiatic Black Bear. The Moon Bear is listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as Vulnerable.
