Bac Kan: Awakening potential, opening the way for high-tech medicinal herb cultivation

The project started planting 7 hectares of Solanum procumbens in Thuong Giao commune, Ba Be district.

The project uses capital mainly from businesses, people and the National Target Program on Socio -Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period with a total investment of more than 220 billion VND.

The project invests in developing concentrated growing areas for 18 precious medicinal herbs with high economic value; invests in developing cooperatives, production and processing facilities for precious medicinal herbs from small to large scale, from preliminary processing, traditional processing to the application of high technology for deep processing to supply raw materials and consume local medicinal products according to the standard linkage chain, serving domestic use needs and aiming for export.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Kan , the project implementation area is 225 hectares in the communes of Dong Phuc, Hoang Tri, Quang Khe, My Phuong, Yen Duong, Thuong Giao, Cao Thuong, and Chu Huong in Ba Be district.

Of the total investment capital, the state budget support capital is more than 68 billion VND (accounting for 29.99%), which will support the contents of renting forest environment to implement the project, purchasing technology copyright; supporting the transfer and application of new science and technology, applying technical processes for planting, harvesting, preliminary processing and processing medicinal herbs according to GACP-WHO standards; supporting investment in high-tech planting areas; supporting investment in infrastructure for raw material areas; supporting investment in building medicinal herb processing and production factories; supporting vocational training for local workers; supporting advertising, building product brands; supporting varieties, materials, packaging, and labels for precious medicinal herb growing areas.

This is also the first time Bac Kan has implemented a medicinal project with close links between the government, businesses, people and consumers.

Accordingly, the host of the association is Dong Nam Viet Trading One Member Limited Liability Company. The project implementing unit is DONAVI Bac Kan Precious Medicinal Herbs Joint Stock Company. The partners implementing and consuming the products are Hamint Science and Technology Joint Stock Company; Vietnam Agriculture, Forestry and Environment Development Joint Stock Company.

The scientific, technological and consulting partner is the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development. The partners in on-site cultivation and processing of medicinal herbs are the Ta Anh Cooperative; Yen Duong Cooperative; Cao Thuong General Agricultural Cooperative; Thuong Giao Agricultural Tourism and Service Cooperative; Na Sam and Thuong Giao Agricultural and Forestry Cooperative; Phja Khao Cooperative in Thuong Giao Commune; Chu Huong Agricultural and Forestry Cooperative.

Also according to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Kan, the specific goal of the project is to deploy 70 hectares of medicinal herbs to produce concentrated areas with high technology application; to plant 150 hectares of 18 local precious medicinal herbs with high economic value meeting GACP-WHO standards; to form at least 10 cooperatives for the production and preliminary processing of medicinal herbs; to build a medicinal herb processing and production factory applying high processing technology meeting GMP-WHO standards with the ability to export raw materials and process health care products with an area of 5 hectares...

The project will purchase copyrights for the project's technologies, including 21 copyrights, including 18 processes of 18 medicinal species identified for cultivation by the Project and 3 technological processes, processing, and production of medicinal herbs meeting GMP standards.

Processes are purchased to cultivate medicinal herbs, such as: Morinda officinalis; Cynomorium barbata; Seven leaves one flower; Betel nut; Solanum procumbens; Yellow chrysanthemum; Polyscias fruticosa; Red calyx; Polygonum multiflorum...

In addition, there are 3 processes of essential oil distillation technology; medicinal herb extraction technology; technology for producing health protection foods in the form of tablets and hard capsules.

The output of the product is determined by Bac Kan to promote domestically and internationally, with export activities focusing on some key markets such as China and Japan.

The approval and implementation of this project is considered as a driving force for the development of medicinal potential for Bac Kan. Especially when the project's growing and processing area is located close to Ba Be Lake, a scenic spot that Bac Kan has been focusing its resources on investing in tourism development in recent times.

There are specific policies in developing medicinal herbs in ethnic minority areas, remote areas.
