The status update that caused a social media storm on the afternoon of May 22, 2026.

Wow! Just the detail of "drinking another cup of sweetened tea, lying in a hammock..." has sparked so many comments, because it's so charming. It evokes the image of a leisurely summer afternoon in the Mekong Delta, swaying in a hammock, occasionally sipping cool tea while "eavesdropping" on the list of 140 individuals accused of drug-related crimes, which had previously leaked names from the showbiz world like Long Nhat, Son Ngoc Minh...

Information about the successful dismantling of a drug trafficking ring involving 140 individuals was soon released by the Ho Chi Minh City Police and published in the media. However, the way the Drug Crime Investigation Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Police teased the operation on social media was very appealing and attracted public attention, helping to spread the results of the crackdown to the community.

On the afternoon of May 22nd, a fanpage posted a status update with the content: “I dare the officers to catch me, I’m partying by the beach.” Do you know where in Ho Chi Minh City (after the merger) you can both party and go to the beach at the same time? This immediately went viral. This was a teaser before the Ho Chi Minh City Police announced the successful dismantling of a drug trafficking ring, transforming a complex drug-related location in Vung Tau ward. The operation resulted in the arrest and prosecution of 50 individuals, and the administrative penalties and compulsory rehabilitation of 11 others...

The Ho Chi Minh City Police's Anti-Drug Fanpage has become a social media phenomenon, attracting significant public attention. At the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee's socio-economic press conference on May 28th, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tien Nam, Deputy Head of the Drug Crime Investigation Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Police, stated that the fanpage's popularity stems from the direct leadership and guidance of the Party Committee and the Board of Directors of the Ho Chi Minh City Police in innovating legal education and awareness campaigns, aligning with modern media trends and the public's need for information access online. This includes requiring the police force to be closer to the people, understand them, listen to them, and convey information in a more understandable and effective way. The fanpage's core content remains unchanged, but the delivery method has been modified, adopting a more relatable storytelling approach, increasing interaction, and using language appropriate for the social media environment. The main goal of the fanpage is not to generate high interaction numbers, but to build an official and reliable information channel, contributing to improving the effectiveness of propaganda and raising public awareness about the dangers of drugs.

The method of mobilizing people to participate in eradicating drug abuse through social media posts is very relatable.

On the evening of May 28th, from Hanoi, I had a conversation with Captain Phan Dinh Linh, from the Drug Crime Investigation Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Police. The young police officer shared his enthusiasm for being entrusted by his unit's leadership with managing the fanpage. Guided by his colleagues on how to disseminate information, he and his team sought innovative and trendy approaches to reach the online community, especially young people. Every piece of content, image, and video shared on the fanpage is carefully considered and selected before posting. Responding to comments also requires careful thought from the admin to ensure the interaction is informative and knowledgeable about life and the law. "Behind the interaction is the source of information," Linh shared. In reality, valuable news has been shared and trusted by the public through this channel.

The interaction between the admin and the online community is incredibly engaging.

Speaking about the secret to creating viral content, Linh vividly remembers the message he wrote at the end of 2025: "Why be sad and do drugs? Going to jail is even sadder." Using internet slang and perfectly capturing the feelings of young people, this content immediately went viral online. With this "boost," the fanpage's reach accelerated, and at one point, it garnered 51 million views in just 10 days. Adopting new communication methods, understanding social media algorithms, and especially recognizing that building a reliable communication channel isn't the ultimate goal—this is the approach the admin team of the Anti-Drug Campaign - Ho Chi Minh City Police fanpage is taking.

To successfully overcome addiction, drug users desperately need the understanding and support of the community .

Following the phenomenon of the "Drug Prevention and Control - Ho Chi Minh City Police" fanpage becoming a social media sensation, many netizens expressed their admiration: "Such engaging communication in combating drugs is highly commendable. It not only warns but also captures the attention of young people; to get young people to listen, you have to speak in their language…; the police force is now adopting a very modern approach to engaging with the public…" These compliments encouraged the page's administrators and promoted this innovative approach in the fight against drug abuse, crime prevention, and legal education. In the following article, we will continue to reflect on another effective method used by the police in a border commune in the Central Highlands on the internet.
