At a regular press conference on June 24, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang made comments regarding the 2020 World Human Rights Report of the EU External Action Service (EEAS).

"We acknowledge the assessments of Vietnam's achievements in protecting labor rights, combating child labor and promoting gender equality in the EU External Action Service's 2020 Human Rights Report. Unfortunately, the report still contains some content that is not objective based on information that does not accurately reflect the reality in Vietnam," said Ms. Le Thi Thu Hang.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said that the EEAS report still has some content that is not objective based on information that does not accurately reflect the reality in Vietnam.

In fact, as has been repeatedly affirmed, the Vietnamese State always pays attention to protecting and promoting basic human rights. This has been specifically stipulated in the 2013 Constitution and related legal documents, respected and implemented in practice, and confirmed through achievements in the economic, social, health, and COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control fields. These efforts and successes have also been recognized by the international community in many bilateral and multilateral frameworks, such as the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) cycle III of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

According to Ms. Le Thi Thu Hang, freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of information in Vietnam are clearly demonstrated through the diverse development of types and rich content of Vietnamese newspapers and the fact that more than 70% of the Vietnamese population uses the Internet and international and domestic social networks.

"In Vietnam, no one is arrested or tried just for "expressing opinions" or "protecting human rights". Like other countries, Vietnam is also determined to fight against acts of taking advantage of freedom and democracy to violate the law, infringe upon the interests of the State, and the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and citizens. The investigation, trial and detention process is conducted in accordance with the provisions of the law; the rights of detainees are guaranteed", Ms. Le Thi Thu Hang emphasized.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson also affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to the Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership with the EU. Vietnam is ready to discuss and cooperate with the EU on human rights issues in a frank, open and respectful manner to enhance mutual understanding, through the annual human rights dialogue mechanism and other bilateral exchange frameworks.
