Storm No. 4 entering the Gulf of Tonkin will quickly weaken into a low-lying area.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 7:00 p.m. today, October 7, the center of storm No. 4 was at about 21.2 degrees north latitude; 115.0 degrees east longitude, about 140 km south-southeast of Hong Kong (China). The storm is level 13 (134 - 149 km/h), gusting to level 16, moving slowly westward, about 5 km/h.

NATIONAL CENTER FOR HYDRO-METEOROLOGICAL FORECASTING

Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of Weather Forecasting Department (National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting), said that on October 7, storm No. 4 barely moved, its intensity remained at level 13, gusting to level 16.

"We forecast that in the next 12 hours, storm No. 4 will continue to remain at level 13. On October 8, the storm will gradually weaken and move southward. When it approaches Leizhou Island (China), the storm's intensity will weaken significantly, to around level 8," said Mr. Huong, adding that when it enters the Gulf of Tonkin, the storm will weaken to a low-lying area.

Storm No. 4 (Storm Koinu) moves slowly, seas are rough

According to Mr. Huong, due to the impact of storm No. 4, the northern East Sea has strong winds of level 7 - level 10, the area near the storm's center has strong winds of level 11 - level 13, gusting to level 16; the sea is very rough. All ships operating in this area are affected by strong storm winds.

In addition, in the northern East Sea, waves are 2 - 4 m high, in the northern sea area, waves are 4 - 6 m high, and near the storm center, waves are 6 - 8 m high.

The Head of the Weather Forecast Department added that from now until the end of 2023, there will be 2-4 storms and tropical depressions active in the East Sea, of which 1-2 will directly affect the Vietnamese mainland.

"This year, the number of storms and tropical depressions is lower than the average of many years (about 10-13 storms in the East Sea, of which, about half affect the mainland of Vietnam). Up to this point, our country has suffered 4 storms and 2 tropical depressions," Mr. Huong informed.
