Da Nang Museum - a new cultural symbol of the city.

WHEN THE MUSEUM IS LOCATED WITHIN A HISTORICAL SITE

Responding to a reporter from Thanh Nien newspaper, Mr. Huynh Dinh Quoc Thien, Director of the Da Nang Museum, said that the construction unit for the new museum (at 42-44 Bach Dang Street, Hai Chau District) is urgently completing the final items to prepare for the museum's opening on March 29th, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Da Nang City. The relocation of artifacts to the new museum's exhibition spaces is also nearing completion. "This is a very important event for Da Nang's cultural sector, because when the new museum, expected to be a new cultural symbol of Da Nang, opens, it will also mark the start of phase 2 of the project to restore the Dien Hai Citadel, a special national historical site. After completion, the Da Nang Museum and Dien Hai Citadel will become highlights in the city's cultural and historical landscape," Mr. Thien assessed.

The old building section of the new Da Nang Museum has been completely renovated.

Thus, after nearly 15 years of "living off the land" within the core area of the Dien Hai Citadel historical site, the Da Nang Museum will move to its "new home" on a total area of 8,686 m², comprising a newly built museum block (1 basement floor, 3 above-ground floors) connected to the three buildings at 42-44 Bach Dang and 31 Tran Phu, which have been renovated and upgraded. With a total investment of over 500 billion VND and impressive infrastructure located on three main streets (Bach Dang - Quang Trung - Tran Phu) and right next to the Han River, the new Da Nang Museum, although not yet open to the public, has already become a popular check-in spot for locals and tourists. Besides its stunning paint job, the buildings with their distinct French architectural style are already captivating. This is the former Governor's Palace, built by the French over 120 years ago.

"The creation of a new function for the Governor's Office is very appropriate, because the building itself is a historical artifact and stands as a witness to time. This is where the French built the headquarters of the government apparatus. In the autumn of 1945, the red flag with a yellow star flew atop the Governor's Office, signaling the success of the August Revolution in Da Nang. During the Republic of Vietnam era, this was the City Hall - the largest center of power in Da Nang for the US and the government. On March 29, 1975, the flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam flew atop the City Hall. Later, it continued to be the working building of the People's Committee and the People's Council of Da Nang City. Through many historical changes, this building has always been chosen as the headquarters of the government apparatus. This affirms the stature and special value of a symbolic building for the people of the city," added the Director of the Da Nang Museum.

The 120-year-old Governor's Palace itself, now used as the base for the Da Nang Museum, is already very attractive due to its French architectural style.

" A SYMPHONY" OF SPACES

The neoclassical architectural style with its simple, symmetrical form has helped the Governor's Office retain its appeal after 120 years of construction. Therefore, after relocating the Da Nang Museum to its new location, researchers believe it will become a new cultural symbol of Da Nang, opening up opportunities to promote the role of introducing historical artifacts and documents to a wider audience. The Da Nang Department of Culture and Sports stated that with the goal of making the museum a highlight in the eyes of residents and tourists, and potentially considered a "ceremonial hall" of the city for receiving diplomatic delegations, this is the first time Da Nang has had a cultural project that has undergone an international architectural competition and received consultation on the content and form of the museum's exhibition.

The modern exhibition space, combined with digital technology, attracts visitors.

After relocating its artifacts to a new facility, the Da Nang Museum has reinvented itself, both in terms of its form and the content of its exhibits.

The exhibition spaces at the Da Nang Museum promise to attract visitors.

According to Thanh Nien newspaper's reporter, the Da Nang Museum applies Industry 4.0 technology to create attractive experiential spaces. With modern investment and the application of digital technology in its operational processes, the museum's unique highlights include LED display systems, automatic film projection systems, automatic sensor equipment, and 3D technology… enabling better interaction among visitors. "This is an opportunity for the Da Nang Museum to innovate its exhibitions in terms of scale, content, and form, updating with new perspectives and techniques from Vietnam and around the world regarding exhibition science. Through this, the Da Nang Museum will become a highlight in the overall planning of the cultural and historical square along the Han River," Mr. Thien said.

Over the course of a year, following numerous consultations and three scientific workshops to gather feedback from museum experts, as well as members of the Department of Cultural Heritage and the National Council of Cultural Heritage, the detailed exhibition plan for the Da Nang Museum was finally approved. The exhibition content is structured around six areas: permanent exhibitions, thematic exhibitions, open-air exhibitions, temporary exhibitions, research and development exhibitions, and outdoor exhibitions.

Notably, while the Governor's Office building was previously surrounded by a fence, this has now been removed to bring the outdoor exhibition space closer to the public. This will be a space for large artifacts and an ideal area for visitors to admire valuable items and take souvenir photos of their museum visit. "We expect that, after opening, the Da Nang Museum will become an attractive destination for the public. It will not only be a destination for tourists and museum enthusiasts but also a community space serving the learning, research, sightseeing, and cultural enjoyment needs of the people of Da Nang City," Mr. Thien expressed.

Overwhelmed by the modern space.

At first glance, the ancient French architecture of the Da Nang Museum makes it hard for many to imagine that inside it is a space "filled with technology." Just stepping through the door, visitors are exposed to the most modern museum technologies. The entire museum space utilizes 3D mapping technology, 2D and 3D films are automatically projected, and image slides are connected chronologically through the art of light, audiovisuals, and color…
