Preserving the Son La Prison National Special Relic Site

Located on Khau Ca hill, the special national relic Son La Prison is a symbol of revolutionary heroism. Through many historical ups and downs, preserving and promoting the value of the relic has become an important task, contributing to gratitude to previous generations; educating revolutionary traditions for today's and future generations.

On June 5, 2019, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 687/QD-TTg approving the planning for the preservation, restoration, rehabilitation and promotion of the value of the Son La Prison National Special Relic. The scope and scale of the planning is 32.3 hectares, of which 7.8 hectares are the protected area of the Son La Prison Relic and 24.5 hectares are for expansion research, including proposed additional historical sites and the buffer zone landscape around Khau Ca hill and Goc Oi valley.

The planning objective is to preserve, embellish and promote the historical and cultural values of Son La Prison, becoming a place to educate revolutionary traditions, protect the Fatherland, and the tradition of "remembering the source of water when drinking" for generations of Vietnamese people. Build Khau Ca hill area into a historical and cultural park, an attractive cultural tourist destination, associated with the values of relics and unique traditional cultural values of ethnic communities in the Northwest region, contributing to the development of local socio -economics and tourism.

Immediately after that, the People's Committee established Working Group 2392 to carry out the tasks of preserving, repairing, restoring and promoting the value of the Son La Prison National Special Relic. In the past time, the members of the Working Group have actively carried out tasks according to assigned fields, including: Developing a planning project for the Son La Prison Relic Site, the Son La Prison Martyrs' Cemetery and 2 independent relic sites; dividing into project groups, related to compensation, site clearance, boundary markers to protect relics, relic restoration, conversion of the use of old agency headquarters in the relic area, etc.

Mr. Pham Hong Thu, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said: Currently, the Department is continuing to implement activities to promote the value of the special National Monument of Son La Prison through welcoming tourists to visit, learn about the history, organize educational and experiential activities; survey, research, collect documents and artifacts related to Son La Prison... At the same time, there are specific recommendations to implement the proposal to adjust the overall planning in accordance with actual conditions as well as newly issued regulations.

According to the plan, the area around the relic will be reorganized, both preserving the original relic and creating green spaces, cultural and historical spaces, meeting the needs of visiting and learning about Son La culture and history. The plan also creates a connection between the relics and the Northwest Square into a harmonious space, in which Son La Prison is the center. Building the Khau Ca hill area into a historical - cultural park, an attractive cultural tourist destination associated with the values of the relic and the unique traditional cultural values of the ethnic communities, contributing to the development of the socio-economy, local tourism and protection of the ecological environment.

Ms. Ngo Thi Hai Yen, Director of the Provincial Museum and Library, shared: We hope that the planning for preservation, renovation, restoration and promotion of the value of the special national relic Son La Prison will soon be adjusted and implemented, in order to soon achieve the goal of museum innovation, especially the renovation and upgrading of the old Provincial People's Committee headquarters to build spaces for displaying and introducing unique documents and artifacts about Son La culture and history, helping to promote the value of the tangible cultural heritage that the unit is managing and preserving. At the same time, creating a truly attractive space, attracting people and tourists to visit and experience associated with this special relic.

Many meaningful activities on educating revolutionary traditions for the young generation were held at the relic site.

With strategic decisions, it is expected that the Son La Prison National Special Relic Site will take on a new look in the future, so that this place will not only be a meaningful tourist destination, a "red address" for revolutionary tradition education, but also a cultural activity center, connecting the community and becoming an attractive destination in the journey of tourism to the source in Son La land.
