Typhoon Wipha hits mainland China

According to China Central Television (CCTV), after making landfall at 5:55 p.m. (local time), the storm weakened into a strong tropical depression, with maximum winds of about 30 meters per second.

Wipha had previously caused severe damage in Hong Kong, causing hundreds of flights to be canceled or delayed. For nearly seven hours, Hong Kong had to issue a level 10 storm warning signal - the highest level - before downgrading it to level 8 as the storm passed. Rainfall measured at times exceeded 110mm in just three hours.

The northern part of Hong Kong, bordering the mainland, has seen the heaviest rainfall. The Hong Kong Observatory has warned that more heavy rain is expected in the coming hours.

According to initial statistics, 26 people were hospitalized and 253 people took shelter in emergency centers.

About 500 flights were canceled and another 400 scheduled to take off or land later in the day were affected, according to the Hong Kong Airport Authority. Cathay Pacific canceled all flights between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. that day, and offered free ticket changes and rebooking assistance.

Public transport was almost paralyzed, especially ferry routes were suspended due to rough seas.

In addition to Guangdong, Hainan province and cities such as Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Macau have also been put on high alert. Most daytime flights in these cities have been canceled or delayed.

Before entering China, Typhoon Wipha moved through the Philippines as a tropical depression, causing prolonged heavy rains and exacerbating monsoon conditions. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, more than 370,000 people were affected, of whom 43,000 were forced to evacuate due to flooding, landslides and strong winds.

Two people are still missing, and more than 400 houses were damaged by the storm.

Wipha is the strongest storm to hit Hong Kong since Super Typhoon Saola in 2023.

Iran nuclear talks

Iran will hold nuclear talks with France, Germany and the United Kingdom in Istanbul on July 25, as the three European powers warn that if Tehran does not resume talks soon, international sanctions could be reimposed.

The meeting in Istanbul will take place at the deputy foreign minister level, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei.

Apart from the three European countries, China and Russia are the only remaining parties to the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, which lifted a series of international sanctions in exchange for curbs on Tehran’s nuclear program. The US withdrew from the deal in 2018 under President Donald Trump.

Before the war between Israel and Iran, Tehran and Washington held five rounds of nuclear talks through the mediation of Oman. However, the two sides still disagree deeply, especially on Iran's continued uranium enrichment - something the West wants to stop completely to prevent the risk of developing nuclear weapons. Iran insists its nuclear program is for civilian purposes only.

Also on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin unexpectedly received Ali Larijani - senior adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader on nuclear issues - at the Kremlin.

A video recorded from the ground and quickly spread on social media shows flames shooting out from the left engine as the plane was gaining altitude.

According to flight tracking site Flightradar24, flight DL446 departing from Los Angeles to Atlanta circled over the Downey and Paramount areas after flying out over the Pacific Ocean for safety checks and to prepare for landing.

Delta confirmed that no passengers or crew members were injured. The fire was extinguished shortly after the plane landed safely. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has opened an investigation into the cause of the incident.
