Joan Garcia can confidently debut for Barcelona |
The Catalan club released an official statement to confirm that La Liga's Medical Commission determined that Ter Stegen's injury met the criteria for a long-term absence. On that basis, they allowed Barca to use part of their salary fund to register Joan Garcia.
“FC Barcelona informs us that the La Liga Medical Commission has determined that the injury suffered by Marc-André ter Stegen meets the criteria for a long-term injury as defined by current regulations. The club will proceed immediately to complete the registration procedure for Joan Garcia tomorrow,” the club said in a statement.
The decision came five days after Barca sent Ter Stegen's medical report to La Liga, with the German goalkeeper's written permission. The medical committee took longer than usual to reach a conclusion, which usually takes between 24 and 48 hours.
On the morning of August 13, Dr. Tomás Fernández Jaén, a member of the Commission, visited the Ciutat Esportiva training center in Sant Joan Despí to check on Ter Stegen's condition, together with Barça's head of medical services, Xavier Corbella. After reviewing and confirming the information provided by the club, the Spanish football governing body officially allowed Ter Stegen's name to be removed and Joan Garcia to be registered in his place.
Garcia will now be eligible to start for Barca in their La Liga opener this weekend at home to Real Mallorca. It is similar to how Barcelona last year signed new signing Dani Olmo, thanks to a long-term injury to defender Andreas Christensen.
