Barcelona cannot earn extra income when the match in the US is canceled. |
Previously, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) approved the idea of holding the Villarreal - Barcelona match at Hard Rock Stadium (Miami) on December 20. RFEF considers this a breakthrough in the plan to globalize the tournament.
However, the decision was met with a backlash. Under increasing pressure, the organizing partner Relevent - the unit in charge of the North American market of La Liga, had to announce the cancellation of the event.
In an official announcement, La Liga expressed regret, saying this was a historic opportunity lost in the journey to internationalize Spanish football.
However, the biggest fury came from Villarreal President Fernando Roig Negueroles when he learned the news in the middle of the Champions League match against Man City. According to Marca , Mr. Roig stood up, waved his arms in anger, and made repeated phone calls from the stands.
After the match, he spoke harshly: "I consider this an act of disrespect to the entire club, the leaders, players and fans. Whatever you do, you have to be responsible. You can't make a statement and then withdraw arbitrarily like that."
On Barcelona's side, the club issued a statement that it respects and accepts the decision, but admits it regrets missing the opportunity to expand the tournament's image in a market with great potential like the US.
Although La Liga has not been able to officially take matches abroad, the model of "exporting" Spanish football is not new. The Spanish Super Cup has been held in Saudi Arabia for 4 of the last 5 seasons, bringing in huge revenue for the Federation.
