Psychology of liking public schools and elite schools

The story of parents with children entering grade 10 in Hanoi struggling to find a school for their children is becoming a hot topic on social networking forums. To find a place for their children to study, parents have to stay up all night and sit in long lines waiting for schools to issue application forms, which has become a hot topic of debate. Many people believe that the reason for this situation is that the enrollment quota for public schools is low, not meeting the learning needs of students. There are cases where students have scored high in the grade 10 entrance exam, above 40 points, but still cannot pass any public school.

Meanwhile, the Hanoi Departmentof Education and Training has repeatedly stated that the city does not lack places to study. Recently, Hanoi has also lowered the admission scores of over 30 schools and assigned more than 2,000 enrollment quotas to non-public schools and hundreds more quotas to vocational schools and continuing education centers to meet the learning needs of students.

Regarding Hanoi's enrollment work, the Prime Minister also requested the Minister of Education and Training to direct relevant units to review and report fully and accurately on enrollment work for public grade 10 in the 2023-2024 school year in Hanoi; report to the Prime Minister before July 12, 2023.

The problem of student streaming after secondary school needs to be carefully calculated.

There should be policies to support poor students.

Currently, there are many poor students, whose families are in difficult circumstances, who do not have money to study at private schools. Meanwhile, it is very difficult to get into public schools in the inner city. For these cases, there needs to be a support policy to ensure fairness. The government must consider this and have a support policy to help them study.

The 10th grade enrollment in Hanoi is really problematic, why not build more schools so that students have more places to study?” – Ms. Nguyen Thuy Anh in Dong Da expressed her opinion. Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Trong Van in Ha Dong said that a central district with only 2 to 3 public high schools is not enough. That number is only equivalent to a district in the countryside. The above opinions are also the wishes of many parents of students today.

Regarding this issue, in an interview with the reporter of the Journalist & Public Opinion Newspaper, Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam - Chairman of the Education Council of Dinh Tien Hoang High School, Hanoi (Chairman of the Hanoi Educational Psychology Association) said that the wish for their children to go to public schools is a legitimate wish of parents. But in reality, this wish has never been fully met. Because, our current policy is not to universalize high school education because we do not have the economic conditions to do so.

Through the investigation of the reporter of the Journalist & Public Opinion Newspaper, the situation of parents lining up to buy application forms for students only occurs at some financially autonomous schools, enrolling students throughout the city and located in central districts such as Hoan Kiem, Dong Da... while in districts such as Nam Tu Liem, Bac Tu Liem... many schools have not yet recruited enough students. Parents jostling and staying up all night to buy application forms for their children to enter grade 10 also stems from the psychology of liking key schools while currently many private education models have developed and well met the development needs of students. In addition, vocational schools and continuing education centers have not yet recruited enough students.

Commenting on the above situation, Mr. Nguyen Tung Lam shared: In many developed countries, the education stream after junior high school is implemented very strongly. Depending on each child's ability, they can go to vocational school, study in educational models that combine work and study, or go to high school. There are many school models that are suitable for each child's ability to develop themselves. " At that age, there should be many options to guide them into life, not just one door to high school. The fact that parents generally want their children to go to high school without studying in other school models is the problem, " Mr. Nguyen Tung Lam emphasized.

Do not indulge parents' mistakes but also do not forget the quality of education at schools

Research shows that parents are looking for ways for their children to attend high school and do not want to attend non-public schools, vocational schools, or continuing education centers. This comes from many reasons, including the fact that many parents are not confident in vocational school models. There are also cases where parents have the view that only poor students can study in private schools, so they do not want their children to attend. Meanwhile, many experts asked said that in 10th grade admission, it is necessary to ensure student streaming. Hanoi needs to stream to have many directions for students after finishing secondary school.

It is known that this year Hanoi has proactively divided the students, specifically, nearly 30,000 students will study at private schools and autonomous public schools, accounting for 23.2%; About 7.7% of 9th grade graduates will study at continuing education centers and 13.4% will study at vocational colleges and junior colleges. The largest number of students is about 72,000 students in public high schools.

We cannot run after the wrong thing to solve it. The division of students after junior high school needs to be respected. Students cannot study 100% in public schools and also cannot have 100% of junior high school graduates go to high school. They need to be divided according to their abilities. Accordingly, many students will go to vocational schools, studying while working, ” emphasized Mr. Nguyen Tung Lam.

When asked why many parents do not want their children to learn a trade, they say they are not confident.

However, when asked why their children do not want to study a trade, many parents said they are not confident. Because vocational schools have not received much attention. Facilities, teacher systems and teaching environments are not up to standard. " I know that vocational training is also a good choice if children are not able to study culture. But vocational schools are not currently invested in appropriately, so I am not confident in entrusting my child's future to vocational schools" - Mr. Nguyen Trong Van in Ha Dong confided.

Through discussions with experts and parents, it can be seen that the issue of student streaming after secondary school needs to be taken seriously. It is necessary to invest more in the vocational school system and continuing education centers so that parents can feel secure in sending their children to study. Because these are two educational models with many advantages, suitable for the new era.

Hanoi has no shortage of places to study.

Regarding the image of Hanoi parents struggling and jostling to get a place for their children, which is spreading on social networks, Director of the Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong affirmed that Hanoi does not lack places to study. “I would like to affirm that in Hanoi, there is no shortage of places to study. It is just that there may be a situation where some schools have a good reputation for training, so parents trust them and line up very early in the hope that their children will get a place at the school. When the announcement is not made, they are upset,” said Mr. Tran The Cuong.
