On the afternoon of July 3, the Departmentof Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City officially announced the 10th grade benchmark scores of public high schools in Ho Chi Minh City. After July 31, the second round of additional enrollment will be held for high schools that are still short of enrollment quotas. Students who fail all three of their wishes will have the opportunity to register for additional enrollment.
The benchmark fluctuates wildly.
According to the 10th grade benchmark data announced by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (Tan Binh District) continues to be at the peak of 10th grade enrollment with the highest benchmark score in the city of 24.25 points. With this score, students must achieve an average of over 8 points per subject. After this school, the next 3 high schools with 23.25 points are Nguyen Huu Huan (Thu Duc City), Tran Phu (Tan Phu District), Nguyen Thi Minh Khai (District 3); this score is all down from 0.25 - 1 point compared to last year's benchmark score.
Among the top 10 schools with the highest 10th grade benchmark scores are Gia Dinh High School, Thuc Hanh - Ho Chi Minh City University of Education (both 23 points); Mac Dinh Chi, Le Quy Don, Phu Nhuan, Nguyen Huu Cau all with 22.5 points. Notably, the 10th grade benchmark score at Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School has dropped sharply - from 26.5 points last year to 20 points this year.
Meanwhile, a series of schools in Can Gio, Cu Chi districts, and Thu Duc City have an admission score of 10.5 - 12 points. With the admission score being the sum of 3 subjects: literature, math, foreign language and priority points (if any), students only need to achieve an average of 3.5 - 4 points per subject to pass into grade 10. Specifically, high schools: Binh Khanh, An Nghia, Can Thanh have an admission score of 10.5 - equivalent to last year. Nguyen Van Tang, Nguyen Van Linh, Da Phuoc, An Nhon Tay, Trung Lap high schools have admission scores from 11 to 11.75. Meanwhile, Long Truong, Long Thoi, Phuoc Kien high schools have an admission score of 12 or higher. Compared to last year, most schools have reduced their admission scores by 0.25 - 1.25 points. These are all suburban schools, the number of candidates applying is lower than the enrollment target. In these schools, students only need to achieve 3.5 - 4 points per subject to pass.
The downward trend in benchmark scores continued to be seen in the middle-ranking schools as most schools saw their benchmark scores decrease. For example, Hung Vuong (District 5) decreased by 1 point - from 19.25 last year to 18.25 this year, Marie Curie (District 3) decreased by 0.25 points compared to last year...
Limit the virtual ratio
According to Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, after July 31, when high schools finish receiving applications for the first round of 10th grade admission, the Department of Education and Training will conduct the second round of 10th grade supplementary admission for high schools that are still short of enrollment quotas. However, candidates who fail all three wishes will be allowed to participate in this round of supplementary admission.

Mr. Le Hoai Nam said that the 10th grade enrollment in Ho Chi Minh City in 2024 has been carried out in accordance with the policy, and public high schools in the city have met their 10th grade enrollment targets. The leaders of the Department of Education and Training also noted that after announcing the admission scores, schools will guide parents on how to register for online admission confirmation before submitting their admission applications directly. Schools need to arrange and organize teaching at school appropriately so that students admitted to the 2018 General Education Program are not surprised. Schools need to carefully prepare conditions in terms of staff, facilities, programs, and elective subjects so that students can study well. After compiling all the students who have submitted their admission applications, high schools will report to the Department of Education and Training. If the school has not yet recruited enough students, the Department of Education and Training will develop a plan to recruit additional students for the school to ensure the enrollment target.
According to Mr. Nam, students who do not pass all three wishes are allowed to participate in the second round of additional recruitment. "Students who have passed the exam but do not submit their application and wait for additional recruitment will not be allowed to be accepted by the high school. The additional recruitment is to help students who have achieved high exam scores but did not pass any of their wishes to continue studying at public schools and to help high schools that are short of quotas, especially high schools in the suburbs, ensure that they meet their quotas," Mr. Nam explained.
Another special feature of this year is that after the 10th grade entrance exam, based on the number of students applying to each school, the Department of Education and Training will publish a set of statistics for each secondary school with the number of students taking the exam, the number of students admitted, and the number of students applying for admission. From there, the admission rate will be determined. According to the Department of Education and Training, previously, the statistics were based on the number of students taking the exam and admitted, but it was impossible to know the number of applications submitted among the admitted students. This led to the concept of "virtual ratio" in high schools. In addition, every year there are still cases where students set their wishes quite far away. Changing the 10th grade admission data statistics this year will help overcome these limitations.
According to the HCM City Department of Education and Training, this year, confirming online application submission is a special change of the city in the 10th grade entrance exam, before high schools receive direct admission applications. This year, right from when students started registering their wishes for 10th grade admission, the department conducted a survey of students registering for groups of subjects selected for high schools. Therefore, when high schools receive the list of admitted students, they will receive information about students registering for groups of subjects selected. Based on that, high schools have appropriate arrangements for students, according to their abilities, according to the 2018 General Education Program.
Note the important milestones
According to Mr. Le Hoai Nam, after knowing the benchmark scores, students submit their applications from July 4 to 5:00 p.m. on July 12 online at https://ts10.hcm.edu.vn , go to "Look up 10th grade entrance exam results" and log in. If students do not confirm submitting their admission application online within the above time, they will be considered to have refused admission. For high schools: From July 13 to 16, report to the Department of Education and Training the number of confirmed applications and the need and number of additional enrollments. From July 17 to 31, high schools will organize to receive applications directly from candidates who have confirmed their admission online.
Benchmark scores for assessing capacity in many schools have increased.
On July 3, many more universities announced admission scores based on the results of competency assessment exams.
At Saigon University, the benchmark scores in 2024 increased in all majors compared to 2023, with increases ranging from a few dozen points to more than 100 points. The major with the strongest increase was electronics and telecommunications engineering (microchip design), up 119 points; followed by education management with an increase of 101 points, and software engineering with an increase of 91 points. At the International University (a member of Ho Chi Minh City National University), majors with increased scores compared to 2023 include: chemical engineering, applied mathematics (financial engineering and risk management), data science , computer science, and some majors in joint training programs such as English. However, the increase in scores is not high, only 10 - 30 points. Six majors with the same scores as in 2023 include English, statistics, information technology, industrial systems engineering, space engineering, construction management, and some majors in the joint training group. At Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, according to the competency assessment test method, the highest standard score for 4 majors: logistics and supply chain management, marketing, e-commerce, and international business is 750 points (on a scale of 1,200).
MSc. Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Business Relations Center - Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said that 3 out of the 4 majors above have a standard score increase of 50 points (logistics and supply chain management are new majors), the remaining majors keep the standard score the same.
Representatives of many universities said that this year's competency assessment test continued to be stable compared to previous years, and candidates did well on the test, so the benchmark score according to the competency assessment test score method in many schools and many majors increased. Data from Ho Chi Minh City National University showed that this year's competency assessment test had more than 104,000 candidates taking the test in both rounds, the year with the highest number of candidates taking the test in 7 years of organization. The average score was 664.6, with the highest score being 1,116 and the lowest being 203 (on a scale of 1,200). Ho Chi Minh City National University commented that the general score distribution of candidates had a natural and widespread distribution, demonstrating a high ability to classify candidates, which was favorable for admission. This year's score distribution was similar to that of previous years, demonstrating the stability of the test.
However, compared to 2023, the number of candidates with a score of over 700 has increased sharply. The total number of candidates with a score of over 700 in 2024 is nearly 38,700, 8,000 more than in 2023. Of which, the number of candidates with a score of over 900 is up to 4,654, 2,000 more than in 2023. The score level with the largest increase in the number of candidates is the score range from 801 to 900.
