Teacher arrested for sexually harassing male student in Singapore

The 49-year-old former teacher pleaded guilty on Wednesday (March 1). According to the Straits Times, Deputy Public Prosecutor Yvonne Poon said the teacher had been teaching for more than 22 years, had tutored the boy in civics and was the boy’s regular teacher at the time of the offence.

The incident began on January 28, 2021, when a student’s parent contacted the teacher, expressing concern about her son’s relationship with his classmates and his increasingly tired and depressed demeanor. The boy said he felt ostracized and had no purpose in life.

After talking to the parents, the teacher met with the student privately. The student told the teacher that he had negative thoughts and was thinking about harming himself.

The two then exchanged phone numbers, but the teacher asked the boy to save his number under an alias because their conversations were "illegal".

The teacher seemed to understand the male student because he "had a similar problem when he was 17 years old" and advised the student that men his age only have two ways to relieve stress: "taking medicine and masturbating".

Hearing what the teacher said, the male student felt uncomfortable but did not know how to express his feelings. Meanwhile, the teacher continued to ask his student if he had ever watched porn. Then, the teacher took out his phone and showed the male student adult videos.

On February 6, 2021, the teacher took the male student to his home. During dinner together, the teacher told the male student that he had gone on vacation to Bali with a former student and that they had had sex with two prostitutes.

Both during and after dinner, the student said he felt pressured by the teacher's constant drinking of soju, and when drunk, the teacher began to cry. The teacher began to make physical contact and talk sexually.

The teacher then showed the victim pornographic videos, identifying himself as one of the people in the clips.

That night when he returned home, the boy told his mother what had happened to him. The school where the boy studied reported the incident to the police. The teacher asked for leave from February 2021.

The teacher was later recommended to be imprisoned for 3 months. The court will open on March 28 to give the final sentence.
