In order for children in disadvantaged areas of Quang Tri to be equipped with swimming skills and be able to improve their safety index when in contact with water, in just one year, Quang Tri Provincial Youth Union has mobilized funds to build 4 mobile swimming pools to provide free swimming lessons for children.

Children in rural areas call the mobile swimming pool “a great gift from the Union”. The swimming pool is not only a place for entertainment but also a place to equip thousands of children in these rural areas with essential life skills.

Portable swimming pool: A meaningful gift for children

Le Ngoc Vy, an 8th grader in Hai Lang, is one of those who learned to swim thanks to the mobile pool. Vy said that she lives in a low-lying area, surrounded by floodwaters every flood season, but had no chance to learn to swim, until the swimming pool program helped her build a mobile pool right at her school.

Since the swimming pool was built, Vy immediately registered to go to school. Because Vy understood that this was a necessary skill for herself. Many of Vy's classmates were also extremely happy when for the first time right in the school yard in the poor countryside, there was a clean and spacious swimming pool with cool water built.

Hundreds of students from schools around the area have signed up to learn. The school’s physical education teacher also understands the significance of the “mobile swimming pool”, so he enthusiastically agrees to teach swimming for free.

After 15 lessons, Vy was fully equipped with breathing skills, balancing skills and some basic swimming skills. “Now I am more confident when in contact with rivers and water, especially during the rainy season. This mobile swimming pool is like a gift to us,” Vy said.

Mr. Le Van Phong, Secretary of Hai Lang District Youth Union, said that for many years, free swimming classes have been organized by the District Youth Union. However, due to limited conditions, many free swimming classes have to be organized on canals, rivers, ponds, lakes, etc.

The Provincial Youth Union's mobile swimming pool construction program is a great support for the desire to popularize swimming skills for children in this low-lying area.

“Recently, there have been many tragic drowning incidents. Most of the victims were children. These mobile swimming pools will be the most effective way to limit future drowning accidents,” Phong shared.

Adding a swimming pool will keep hundreds more children safe.

According to the Quang Tri Provincial Youth Union, since launching the campaign to build a mobile swimming pool, this unit has received support from many organizations and individuals. The total amount of support is up to nearly 1.2 billion VND.

Construction options have been proposed. Although the swimming pool is mobile, safety and cleanliness must still be put first.

After that, 4 swimming pools were built in the 4 most difficult districts of the province including Hai Lang, Vinh Linh, Huong Hoa, Dakrong.

Each swimming pool is designed with three swimming lanes with a total length of 24.6m, width of 8.1m and height of 1.2m, equipped with a complete system including: pool liner and pool cover, water filtration system, concrete floor, roof, protective fence and pool frame made of high-strength aluminum alloy.

In addition, the Provincial Youth Union also mobilized to donate swimming accessories, life buoys, swimming goggles, etc., to serve the volunteer activities of teaching and learning swimming for free for children.

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Toan – Deputy Secretary of the Quang Tri Provincial Youth Union – said that ensuring children’s safety is the most important thing. Therefore, these mobile swimming pools are the most practical projects to help students have access to and practice swimming skills. This is the most direct and effective way to prevent drowning.

“The need to learn to swim is a legitimate need of many other children throughout the countryside of Quang Tri, to protect themselves from the dangers of water. In the near future, we will continue to mobilize more funds from other organizations and individuals to build more similar mobile swimming pools. One more swimming pool means hundreds more children are safe,” said Mr. Toan.
